Sophomore center Ta'Shia Phillips set new school NCAA Tournament records for points, rebounds and field goals with 24, 18 and 11 respectively but it was not enough as the No. 5 seeded Xavier University women's basketball team dropped a 74-59 decision to No. 12 Gonzaga on Saturday evening in first round action of the 2009 Division I Women's Basketball Championship at Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Wash. With the loss, the Musketeers conclude the season with a 25-7 record, while the Zags improve to 27-6.
Two other Musketeers tallied double-digit scoring as senior Tudy Reed and junior Dee Dee Jernigan both scored 10 points in the contest. The Xavier ladies trailed the Zags for the entire game except with the exception of three junctures in the first half in which the team tied the score at nine, 13, and 17.
While the final result was not what the team had anticipated, the XU women can hold their heads high for another overall great season, which included being crowned the Atlantic 10 regular season conference champions. The Musketeers have a lot to look forward to next season. In addition to losing just one player to graduation -- senior guard Tudy Reed -- the team expects star center Amber Harris to return from her injury in full form and looks forward to the continued development and leadership from its underclassmen.
