Xavier Advances Past Blue Demons in Opening Round of Big East Tourney
By Jay Skeldon, 3/8/2017

Trevon Bluiett and the Xavier Musketeers came alive in the second half to knock off DePaul, 75-64, in the opening round of the Big East Tournament on Wednesday evening at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Bluiett, who was held scoreless in the first half, finished with a game-high 17 points all of which came after the break. He also reeled in nine boards. Freshman point guard Quentin Goodin and junior J.P. Macura provided much of the spark in the second half to ignite the Muskies, adding 13 points apiece and bringing a stout defensive effort. DePaul was led by Billy Garrett Jr. who scored 16.

With the win, the Musketeers picked up their twentieth win of year, improving their record to 20-12 overall and strengthened their case for inclusion into the Field of 68 in the NCAA Tournament. Xavier has now recorded four straight 20 win seasons. Most immediately, though, XU advances to face off against No. 2 seed Butler in the Quarterfinals of the Big East Tournament on Thursday. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
