X Displays Offensive Firepower in Exhibition Win
The Xavier Musketeers took care of business in their lone exhibition game on Thursday evening, defeating visiting Kentucky Wesleyan, 98-69, at Cintas Center. The Muskies were without two of their expected top contributors, Quentin Goodin and Zach Hankins, who sat out due to injuries. X was led by a core of four players who finished in double figures scoring including Naji Marshall and Tyrique Jones who finished with a team best 21 points each. Paul Scruggs and Ryan Welage rounded out the double figure scorers with 20 and 17, respectively. The Musketeers were far from perfect, which is to be expected at this stage, but there was good reason for optimism from the team.
Xavier displayed tremendous athleticism and an up-tempo style, pushing the ball up the court and slicing towards the paint. X shared the ball well, finishing with 21 assists as a team including five by Welage. The Muskies attacked the rim with 58 of Xavier's 98 points coming from within the lane.
Kentucky Wesleyan was led by Adam Goetz, a St. Henry High School grad in Northern Kentucky, who finished with a game-high 23 points.
After tonight's tuneup, Xavier will gear up for its home opener at Cintas Center on Tuesday, Tuesday, November 6 at against IUPUI. Game time is set for 8:30 p.m.
