Welage Explosive from Long Range in XU's Season Opener
Xavier graduate transfer Ryan Welage carried the Musketeers with a game-high 24 points as X opened up the 2018-19 men's basketball season victorious, defeating visiting IUPUI, 82-69, on Wednesday night at Cintas Center. The win marked the first for first year head coach, Travis Steele, who took over the reins for the X-Men in the offseason. Welage led a second half offensive surge for the Muskies in which he had 12 points during a 15-6 run as XU retook a brief IUPUI lead. Welage shot 9-of-17 from the field including a 6-of-13 from behind the arc. He added seven rebounds, two assists while recording no turnovers, capping an impressive debut for XU.
Welage was joined in double figures scoring by junior Tyrique Jones and sophomore Naji Marshall who notched 17 and 13 points, respectively. Graduate transfer Kyle Castlin finished just shy of a double figures scoring with nine points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds in a very solid debut for the X-Men.
Junior captain Quentin Goodin did not dress for the game as he continues to nurse his healing dislocated shoulder.
The IUPUI Jaguars (0-1) were led by Jaylen Minnett who finished with 21 points.
With the win, Xavier (1-0) has now won 29 straight regular season openers. Xavier will use this game to identify areas for improvement as the Musketeers look ahead to their next opponent, Evansville. The Purple Aces will visit Cintas Center for the second game of the season on Saturday, November 10 at 4:00 p.m. The game will be televised live on FSN.
