Xavier Wins Second Straight on the Road
The Xavier Musketeers picked up their second straight road win, knocking off DePaul, 67-59, on Tuesday night at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. It was a game in which Xavier held commanding control for most of the game until the Blue Demons mounted a furious comeback in the final five minutes of action to tighten the score. Xavier (15-8, 4-6 BIG EAST) won the game with an all-around team effort on both ends of the court. The Musketeers were led by five players in double figures scoring including Paul Scruggs who led Xavier with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Scruggs also pulled down seven rebounds. Tyrique Jones, Quentin Goodin, and KyKy Tandy scored 12 apiece while Naji Marshall added 11 points. For the second straight game, X displayed toughness and grit on defense and on the glass, limiting DePaul to one shot possessions. Jones reeled in 18 rebounds for the second straight game for the Musketeers and recorded his fifteenth double-double of the season.
In the first half, Xavier built a 35-16 lead, highlighted by eight made 3-pointers for the Musketeers and limiting DePaul to a season low in points and lowest points in a half for the Blue Demons since 2010. Xavier built a lead in the second half as large as 19 points, 55-36, with 4:43 remaining in the game until DePaul went on a late run to close the margin. In the end, it was not enough and Xavier held on, closing the game out at the foul line.
Xavier looks to carry its recent momentum to next game as it plays host to Providence on Saturday night. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. at Cintas Center.
