Lady Muskies Return to Winning Side Against Bonnies

The Xavier women’s basketball team snapped its eight game losing streak defeating St. Bonaventure 58-50 Sunday afternoon at Cintas Center. Senior Amber Gray ended with a game-high 18 points shooting 6-of-8 from the field including 2-of-2 from long range.

The Musketeers snapped its longest losing streak of the season and improves their record to 7-14 and grabbed their first conference win of the season (1-7). The Bonnies slip to 9-13 overall and 2-5 in the Atlantic 10. Xavier has won 10 of the last 11 meeting and holds the 18-4 advantage in the all-time series.

XU grabbed a 39-23 lead in the second half after making two threes in less than a minute. Ashley Wanninger drained the first long ball, her second of the game. Wanninger finished with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Bonnies cut the lead down to 46-35 with 8:16 remaining in the second half. SBU went on an 8-0 run lasting 1:53. During the span the Musketeers missed four field goal attempts. However, the Musketeers built up too large of a lead for the Bonnies to ever threaten Xavier’s victory.

Aliyah Zantt had a set a career-high with six assists to go along with her eight points and five rebounds. Wanninger knocked down multiple three pointers for the 13th time this season and ranks sixth in the Atlantic 10 for threes per game (2.1).

The Musketeers sank a season-high nine three point attempts and a season-best 56.3 percent from long range (9-of-16). Five different players sank three pointers in the victory, Wanninger, Gray, Zantt, Shatyra Hawkes, and Briana Glover. XU finished shooting 50 percent (20-of-40) from the field and held SBU to 29.6 percent (16-of-54).







XU outrebounded SBU 36-26. The Musketeers dished out 17 assists, their second most of the season, only behind their game against High Point on November 19 when they had 22.
Xavier held a 29-19 lead going into the break. Gray had a team-high seven points and Wanninger grabbed six rebounds in the first half and knocked down a three pointer to start the game.

The Musketeers used a 10-0 run to grab a 16-4 lead with 10:48 left in the first half. During the run Xavier forced 11 consecutive missed field goals by St. Bonaventure and held them scoreless for 5:53.

Xavier shot 47 percent (9-of-19) from the field in the first half while St. Bonaventure was held to 32.1 percent (9-of-28). XU had twice as many rebounds in the first half, outrebounding SBU 20-10.
