X Shows Resilience in Knocking Off UC in the Shootout
Travis Steele frequently says that "big-time players make big-time plays in a big-time games." That proved to be true on Sunday afternoon as senior captain Paul Scruggs led the Xavier Musketeers to a 77-69 victory over Cincinnati at Fifth Third Arena in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout. Scruggs finished with a game-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting while adding five rebounds and five assists. With the win, the senior Scruggs finishes his career in Crosstown Shootout games with a 3-1 record.
Scruggs efforts were supported by sophomore captain Zach Freemantle who notched 16 points on nine rebounds as well as graduate transfer guard Nate Johnson who scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting including 2-of-2 from 3-point range. Xavier moves its record to a perfect 6-0 with the win, marking the first team in college basketball this season to record six wins.
Xavier returns back home for its final game of the non-conference as it plays host to Oklahoma on Wednesday night. The game, which is part of the BIG EAST-BIG 12 Challenge, is set to tip off at 8:00 p.m. and will be televised on FS1.
