Scruggs picks up 3rd foul - not good.
Worst part is it happened with under a minute in the 1st half. Major "deer in the headlights" decision by Steele. So far, he has had the Midas touch. Hope that was just a really bad anomaly.

Basketball Jones is looking like All-World this first half.

I have a feeling that his weight loss will be this year's Uber driver story - mentioned in every game.
He is going to have some huge games this year. Despite missing point-blank shots, I really like what I see out of Hankins. I don't think the BE will have two bigs as active as those two.

We have only two guards that can handle the ball Q and Scruggs, but more alarming is the lack of effort on D. Marshall looks terrible
Ball handling will be an issue even with Q. Scruggs dribbles too high and wide. High ceiling offensively, but I don't want him with the ball in his hands in crunch time. Q needs to be the pg when he is in, and Scruggs will thrive playing off the ball.

I usually love how Marshall plays, and it's admirable he played despite being sick, but he played low IQ ball yesterday. I also remember a point in the game when Jone stopped his dribble in the lane and looked at Marshall, who stood like a statue in the corner, instead of moving towards the ball. He has to play really well this year for this team to have a chance. I think he will.

I agree with most posts regarding Naji's performance and relating to him being sick. Hopefully, his loafing after a missed basket or poor play was just a part of it. What was also concerning was the play of Scruggs at PG. I know he was in foul trouble, but he did not look real confident being the PG vs the SG when q is in the game. Our depth at guard is going to a problem most of the year since I don't see Hardin or Kennedy being confident ball handlers. We can thank Mack for this since he had one foot out the door last year left the cupboard bar at PG/SG the last two years. Jones performance was encouraging although I didn't realize how out of shape he was last year until the announcers pointed it out ten times. Next thing you know Stainbrook drives an uber, JP is Dennis the Menace, and Tre has been working on toning his body.
Hops,

Too bad we couldn't nab another combo guard likeDavid Johnson. When CM recruited him, as XAVIER'S HC, he told him he could play anywhere....whether it was here, or that team down south.......an insider on this board can corroborate.

agree with 'Hops. Many concerning aspects as I was fairly close to the floor. A couple bright spots, mainly, all 3 transfers will contribute and are improvements over what would have been had Steele just brought in more raw Frosh. Hardin now is serviceable. Kennedy shows some promise but miles to go. Hankins did everything but put the ball in the bucket, that will come. He was as athletic as advertised and a better rim protector than I had anticipated. My biggest concern, aside from Skyhop's PG depth issue, is REBOUNDING...! Wellage can provide offense but is frail. Castlin is willing but not imposing either. Naji gets bounced around a bit in the trenches. X going to have to sell out with a total team effort to keep the opposition off the boards on both ends. We knew this was a massive reconstruction thanks to Mack being less than "all-in" last season. I saw enough to be hopeful, especially once Q is back & acclimated. Going to need some patience and trust the process - which I do.
Good observations X-Luc, but that really isn't a concern for me. Scruggs and Goodin rebound well for guards, as do Marshall and either big. Welage and Castlin are the two avg rebounders, but if Welage can rain 3's like he did the other night, I'm fine with that. X will be in the familiar position of trying to hide him on D, like the great 3 point specialist X had last year.

I heard Wellage had seven rebounds in the IUPUI game. If that’s true that ain’t to shabby. Think we ought to give our team a little more jell time.Seems like all are being overly critical after just one game and all our pieces aren’t even there yet! Take a big deep breath everybody. I recall we started out pretty slow last year when everyone wondered why we even brought Canter in to Xavier. He turned out pretty good. So will our new grad transfers.....just watcH!!!! —— Bigggernlife

this has ZERO to do with "deer in headlights" or being a rookie coach or some bad anomaly. Steele flat out said he doesn't believe in sitting guys who have 2 fouls. they have to learn how to play without fouling, especially in that type of situation. he knows he has two fouls. he knows his coach wants to keep him in because he needs him. he's got to play smarter there.

Seriously? That scares me even more. I'm sleeping with the lights on tonight.
