Andy Mac: One Month Away from Season Opener
Andy Mac Williams,
Eight of the 30 Pre-season practices are now complete. The Opener on Tuesday November 9 versus Niagara is now just 33 days off. X will stage Musketeer Madness at Cintas Friday, October 22. The D-2 Exhibition Game is Friday, November 5 at Cintas versus Ferris State (7PM Tip). I haven't found out yet whom XU plays in the NCAA Secret Scrimmage. Who, When and Where are unknown. We can't attend anyway.
Sophomore Colby Jones won Xavier Way competition in practice week #1 and is wearing the Gold Jersey. He won 2 or 3 times as a Frosh. All-time Gold Jersey leader is Tu Holloway (somewhere over 30) w/ Paul Scruggs closing fast.
6-11 Sophomore Dieonte Miles is having a strong 2nd week-rebounding, rim running, defending the post. His confidence is building. Miles matches up w/ 6-9 Frosh Cesare Edwards in BIG Man shooting drills and most 5x5 action. Their battles are epic. Miles has earned the vets trust by running the floor on fast breaks-catching everything they lob and finishing at the rim. W/ XU's improved depth, more easy transition buckets seem in the cards.
TEAM 100 is shooting it much better across the board. Multiple 3 point threats from many spots on the floor-better mid-range scoring and potentially a much improved FT shooting team-well North of 70%.
Pressuring the ball was a main theme Wednesday w/ a red taped line 30 feet from the basket. The goal stop the ball and force a pass above NBA 3 point line-force a pass-allow trailers to catch up-then match-up and close-out on shooters quickly initiating the packline "D". 3 defensive stops equal a kill. 7 kills/game or more adds up to a Muskie win over 90% of the time. Plenty of woofing and barking in practice after two stops w/ a kill on the line!! Sprint-no jogging or back pedaling!!
Travis has the depth to expect no resting on "D". He can mix in some press and not in just desperate situations late game. Practice tempo is extremely upbeat. One drill flows seamlessly into the next.
It's a function of experience-smart underclassmen-coaching staff continuity-2nd year grad assistants and 3 veteran hard working walk-ons(#12 Zach Swetye, #20 Ramon Singh and #25 Spencer Cody). They know their roles and help make practice flow. Ideally, all three get ample reward PT late in blow-out wins. They have earned it!!
I'll be away on a family trip next week. Full bore TEAM 100 overage resumes Monday Oct. 18th.
