XU Thwarted by Marquette in Milwaukee
By Andy Mac Williams, 1/23/2022

Frustrating 75-64 Xavier loss at Marquette Sunday! Muskies continue to miss a ton of lay-ups and close in post looks at the hoop. 3 pointers were a liablity(just 6 for 23-26%) while MU sniped 10-26 from outside-38.5%). X did not attempt a FT in 1st half. Maybe they didn't drive into the paint enough? but come on!! No free throws?? for a team that's Top 25 in NCAA in FT attempts. Overall, XU played hard, but failed to leverage their seeming height advantage.

Freemantle was limited w/ foul trouble. Zach and Jack Nunge combined for 6-16 FG and 2-4 FTs while MU stud Justin Lewis had a field day(20 points-13 rebounds-4 made "3s".

XU started attacking off the dribble-down 7 late in 1st half and seized a 5 point lead 53-48 w/ about 14 to play 2nd half. Colby Jones and Paul Scruggs drove it well.

Adam Kunkel chipped in nicely. Muskie "D got stops. MU just reeled XU in though.

X let missed makeable shots bother them and they devolved into what Travis Steele labels "heroball"-stepping outside the offense-not making plays the game dictates-losing patience-and going solo. Not "ME" ball-not being selfish-just trying too hard to help the team and not making smart plays.

Marquette stayed poised-made runs and leveraged their home court advantage. MU has now won 6 in a row(14-6, 6-3 BIG EAST-3rd behind Providence(6-1) and Villanova(7-2).

PC beat Butler 69-62 at the Dunk Sunday. Provi plays XU at Cintas Wed.( 6:30 PM-FS1).

Muskies are 14-4, 4-3 BE-6th in crowded standings-a half game back of UConn and Creighton(both 4-2).

Monday Covid make-up game in BIG EAST-St Johns at Seton Hall( 9 PM-FS1).
