Scouting Georgetown at Xavier
Andy Mac Williams,
Scouting Georgetown at Xavier-Saturday March 5th-Cintas Center( 7 PM-FS1). Super Senior Guards Paul Scruggs and Nate Johnson will be honored pre-game( at 6:40) along w/ Senior walk-ons and Senior managers. Scruggs is unique(1st XU player to play 5 seasons-All Time games played leader(147)-16th in scoring w/ 1594 points-6th in assists w/ 493-10th in steals w/ 170-ony Muskie player to beat UC 4 times in Crosstown Shootout). Sure fire Hall of Famer.
Johnson is a two year starter after transferring from Gardiner Webb-scoring 428 points in 41 games. XU is 29-12 in games Nate has played and 1-8 in games he's missed because of injury. Ben Stanley has graduated from Xavier, but does have a year of eligibility remaining (Covid bonus year).
X is fighting to salvage an NCAA Tournament berth. A home loss to Georgetown would gravely impact Muskies' #37 NCAA NET(bad Quad 4 defeat) and force them precariously out on NCAA bubble w/ major work needed next week in NYC at BET.
X will play either Butler or DePaul Wednesday at MSG in an 8-9 1st Round BET game(4:30-FS1). It's Butler if BU beats Villanova Sat(Noon-FOX) in Indianapolis or if DePaul loses at UConn(Sat. 5PM-FOX). Muskies most likely need to win Wed and beat Georgetown Sat(tomorrow). XU's Thursday opponent in NYC would be #1 Seed Providence(rested w/ a 1st Round bye).
G-town's record is horrendous(6-23 overall, 0-18 BIG EAST, 19 straight losses, last win Dec 11th vs Syracuse. Hoyas played decently Wed. at Seton Hall losing 73-68 in Newark. Defense has been problematic(80PPG in BE) -4 on the glass-38%FG-but they can score the ball especially from "3" and they play up to 10 guys.
Coach Patrick Ewing(5th year) seemingly is on the hot seat. He guided his team to 4 BET wins in 4 days last March for a miracle NCAA bid, but 4 starters departed. Soph PG Dante Harris is back(12PPG-4 assists-33 min/game).
Captain Donald Carey(2nd year Siena transfer) leads at 14PPG-40% "3s". 6-6 Frosh Aminu Mohammed(14PPG-8 rebounds) is a Top 50 recruit and playing that way. Citadel transfer Kaiden Rice is a 3 point sniper(89 makes-38%). Hoyas have two 7 footers Tim Igohoefe and Ryam Mutombo(Diekembe's son).
The heat is on XU with NCAA hopes at stake. A track meet favors G-town as they love to run and trade baskets and Hoyas can get hot and score 3 by 3 which is a hard style for Muskies to match.
Win Saturday and Wednesday in NYC and life is good! Let the fur fly vs PC on Thursday. Providence was lucky to beat XU twice w/ a buzzer "3" and in 3 OTS.
