Xavier Continues 2022 Season in NIT Tournament
By Andy Mac Williams, 3/13/2022

Xavier Basketball will continue the 2022 season by playing in the 32 team NIT. Muskies missed out on a NCAA bid-losing Wednesday 89-82 in OT to Butler in BET Opening Round at MSG. XU gets #2 Seed in their 8 team NIT Regional. X will play host to Horizon League regular season champ Cleveland State on Tuesday, March 15 at 9 p.m. at Cintas Center. The game will be televised on ESPNU. CSU posted a 20-10 overall record (15-6 in Horizon). The Vikings were upset in the Horizon Tournament by Wright State. CSU made NCAA field last season and lost to Houston.

Dennis Gates is CSU's head coach (3rd year). He's considered a hot property and is being mentioned in some Power Conference coaching searches. CSU signed him recently to a contract extension thru 2006-2007.

Dayton is #1 Seed in Xavier's NIT region. Flyers have to open at Toledo(MAC regular season champ) because UD Arena is hosting NCAA First 4 this week. XU would play 3 Seed Florida(SEC)-Iona winner(Rick Pitino) in Round 2. Dayton would get winner of 4 Seed Vandy vs Belmont.

A Xavier-Dayton game could take place in Round 3 w/ the winner headed to MSG for NIT Semifinals. Muskies and Flyers have not played since November 2015 in Orlando(exempt tournament) w/ XU winning 90-61.

The long XU-UD series was discontinued after 2012-2013 season when X left A-10 for BIG EAST greener pastures. Xavier last played in NIT in 2019 (Travis Steele's 1st season as head coach) beating Toledo then losing 78-76 in OT at Texas. Shaka Smart's Longhorns went on to win NIT.

NIT was not played in 2020 (COVID) and operated w/ a reduced 16 team field in 2021 (Memphis won it). XU beat Dayton to win 1958 NIT at the old MSG.
