By Musketeer Madness, 11/16/2024

Xavier secured a decisive 75-60 victory over Wake Forest in a marquee matchup at the Cintas Center on Saturday afternoon before a sold out crowd of 10,455. The game honored the late Skip Prosser who was the head coach at both Xavier and Wake Forest and left a significant legacy at both schools with the players and fans.

The win improved the Musketeers' record to 4-0 while handing the Demon Deacons their first loss of the season. Ryan Conwell led Xavier’s charge, contributing 21 points, including four three-pointers, and an impressive 7-of-8 performance from the free-throw line. Supported by a strong defensive effort, Xavier capitalized on Wake Forest’s 18 turnovers to score 27 points, which proved pivotal in the game.

Wake Forest showed resilience, with Hunter Sallis leading the team with 16 points and five assists. Davin Cosby Jr. also shone for the Demon Deacons, scoring 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including three three-pointers.

However, Wake Forest struggled to control the game on the boards, managing only 29 rebounds compared to Xavier's 31. Turnovers and a lack of second-chance opportunities hindered their chances to mount a comeback, despite shooting an efficient 46.8% from the field.

Xavier controlled the tempo from the start, taking a 34-24 lead into halftime. Zach Freemantle provided consistent support for the Musketeers with 11 points and six rebounds, while Dayvion McKnight added 13 points and three assists.

The Musketeers’ bench also stepped up, contributing 18 points, showcasing the depth and versatility of their lineup. Xavier's ability to hit timely shots, including 10 three-pointers at a 38.5% clip, kept Wake Forest at bay throughout the contest.

The victory highlighted Xavier's defensive tenacity and efficient execution on offense, cementing their position as a formidable team early in the season. Wake Forest, now 4-1, will look to regroup as they prepare for their next challenge, focusing on limiting turnovers and improving their interior presence. Meanwhile, Xavier continues to build momentum, with its blend of perimeter shooting and strong team play signaling its readiness for the rigorous remaining non-conference schedule and Big East schedule ahead.

The final game in Xavier's season opening homestand is Sienna before heading to the Ft. Myers Classic in Florida over Thanksgiving. Xavier will tipoff against the Siena Saints on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 6:30pm at Cintas Center.
