Xavier Falls to Kent State Despite Strong Effort from Christie
By Musketeer Madness, 11/23/2024

The Xavier Musketeers fought valiantly on the road Saturday but fell short against Kent State, 89-69, at the M.A.C. Center. Loren Christie was the standout performer for Xavier, leading the team with 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting and pulling down four rebounds. Despite a promising start and flashes of brilliance, turnovers and Kent State's sharpshooting proved too much to overcome.

Xavier opened the game with energy, trading leads with Kent State early in the first quarter. Christie dominated inside, and Meri Kanerva chipped in with 14 points, showcasing her versatility. However, the Musketeers struggled to maintain possession, committing 21 turnovers, which Kent State converted into 26 points. By halftime, the Musketeers trailed 41-30, despite outscoring the Golden Flashes in the paint, 38-26, over the course of the game.

The second half saw Xavier attempt a rally, with strong contributions from Tae’lor Purvis, who added five steals and five points, and Aizhanique Mayo, who scored 10 points. However, Kent State’s Mya Babbitt (25 points) and Bridget Dunn (17 points, 12 rebounds) proved unstoppable. The Musketeers showed resilience in the fourth quarter, scoring 23 points, but Kent State’s 13 three-pointers and 94.1% free-throw shooting sealed the result. Xavier now sits at 3-3 and will look to bounce back in their next outing.

Xavier returns to action on Tuesday, November 23 when they play host to Youngstown State. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cintas Center.
