Xavier women's basketball opened its season with a 55-36 loss to San Jose State at Cintas Center on Tuesday night. The Musketeers started strong, taking a 21-10 lead with just under five minutes remaining in the first half. However, San Jose State closed the half on a 6-0 run to trim Xavier’s lead to 21-16. The Spartans took control in the second half, outscoring the Musketeers 39-15, including an 18-1 run to open the third quarter, and cruised to a 19-point victory.
Júlia Garcia Roig led Xavier with eight points, while Meri Kanerva added seven points and three rebounds. Despite strong individual performances, including five rebounds from Aizhanique Mayo and four steals from Tae'lor Purvis, the Musketeers struggled offensively, shooting just 25% from the floor and 10% from beyond the arc.
San Jose State also dominated on the glass, outrebounding Xavier 42-28, and capitalized on turnovers, scoring 20 points off 20 Musketeer giveaways.
Xavier will look to rebound when they continue their four-game homestand against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m.
