Bowling Green Overwhelms Xavier in Non-Conference Matchup
By Musketeer Madness, 12/8/2024

Xavier women’s basketball fell 78-59 to Bowling Green on Thursday night at the Stroh Center. The loss brought the Musketeers to 4-5 on the season, as they struggled to overcome Bowling Green’s consistent shooting and strong defensive play. Despite a late push in the fourth quarter, Xavier was unable to cut into Bowling Green’s commanding lead.

Bowling Green jumped out to an early advantage, leading 23-15 after the first quarter. The Falcons maintained their momentum in the second quarter, shooting 44.4% from the field to extend their lead to 42-24 at halftime. Erika Porter was a key contributor for Bowling Green, finishing the game with 17 points and seven rebounds. Amy Velasco also had a standout performance with 19 points, six assists, and two steals.

The Musketeers’ offense picked up in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter when they outscored Bowling Green 18-14. Meri Kanerva led Xavier with 15 points and five rebounds, while Daniela López added 14 points on 7-for-14 shooting. Aizhanique Mayo chipped in with 11 points, including three three-pointers, but the team’s 25% accuracy from beyond the arc limited their ability to close the gap.

Bowling Green capitalized on Xavier’s turnovers, scoring 21 points off 15 Musketeer miscues. The Falcons also dominated the paint with 40 points compared to Xavier’s 26. While Xavier showed resilience in stretches, Bowling Green’s depth and ability to control the game tempo proved too much.

The Musketeers will look to bounce back as they prepare for their next game against Cincinnati in the Skyline Chili Crosstown Shootout and aim to regain momentum in their season. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 15 at Cintas Center.
