Behind a stellar performance from Meri Kanerva and Tae’lor Purvis, the Xavier women’s basketball team secured a 71-62 victory over Fordham on Sunday at the Raising the B.A.R. Invitational at Haas Pavilion. The dynamic duo combined for 36 points to propel the Musketeers past the Rams in a closely fought battle.

Xavier (5-7) entered the contest looking to snap a three-game losing streak and delivered one of its most balanced efforts of the season. Purvis led all scorers with 19 points, adding seven rebounds, while Kanerva contributed 17 points and four boards. Their efficiency at the free-throw line, going 13-for-14 combined, helped seal the win.

Fordham (6-5) was paced by Taylor Donaldson, who poured in a game-high 24 points, including five three-pointers. However, the Rams struggled with consistency, shooting just 32% from the field. Irene Murua was a force in the post, tallying 17 points and 12 rebounds, but the Rams couldn’t overcome a decisive third-quarter surge by Xavier.

The Musketeers took control in the third quarter, outscoring Fordham 24-13. Kanerva and Purvis fueled a run that turned a narrow halftime deficit into a commanding lead. Kanerva’s three-pointer with 3:51 left in the third gave Xavier a lead it would never relinquish, and Purvis added timely baskets to extend the advantage.

Xavier’s bench also played a pivotal role, contributing 13 points. Aizhanique Mayo chipped in 11 points, including three triples, while Loren Christie added 10 points and four rebounds. The Musketeers showcased their depth and poise, particularly in the game’s critical moments.

Fordham made a late push in the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to five points with under two minutes remaining. However, clutch free-throw shooting from Purvis and Christie, who combined to go 21-for-25 from the charity stripe, kept the Rams at bay. Xavier’s defense also forced 19 Fordham turnovers, converting them into 20 points.

Xavier will return to BIG EAST action on Monday, Dec. 30, when they face Georgetown at McDonough Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, as the Musketeers aim to build on Sunday’s momentum.
