Xavier's Valiant Comeback Falls One Point Short Against Undefeated Georgia
By Musketeer Madness, 11/22/2025

The Xavier Musketeers (3-4) delivered an incredible display of resolve Friday night at TD Arena, erasing a double-digit halftime deficit against the undefeated Georgia Bulldogs (7-0). However, the massive rally was erased with a late Georgia three-pointer and a missed final look left Xavier on the wrong side of a heart-stopping 78-77 decision in the Charleston Classic.

The contest began as a defensive nightmare for the Musketeers. Georgia, showing why they entered the night a perfect 6-0, raced to a commanding lead, dropping 53 points in the first half alone. Xavier looked sluggish on both ends, allowing the Bulldogs to convert easy opportunities while struggling to generate consistent offense. When the halftime buzzer sounded, Xavier trailed 53-41, facing a daunting 12-point mountain to climb just to stay competitive.

But the break seemed to ignite a different team. The Musketeers returned to the court with renewed defensive intensity and the kind of fast-paced attack Xavier fans expect. They completely flipped the script, holding Georgia to a meager 25 points in the second half while pouring in 36 of their own. Every possession became a battle, and the momentum slowly but surely shifted toward the Big East squad.

The dramatic comeback reached its climax in the final minutes, fueled by clutch shooting from the Xavier backcourt. With just over two minutes remaining, the Musketeers found themselves clawing back, possession by critical possession. Forward Filip Borovicanin secured a crucial offensive rebound, setting up Malik Messina-Moore for a three-pointer that cut the Bulldogs’ lead to a single possession.

The pressure mounted seconds later when Tre Carroll drew a foul and sank the first free throw, closing the gap to a single point, 75-74. But the subsequent missed free throw left the score unchanged, giving Georgia a precious margin. The Xavier defense held strong through the next possession, but the Bulldogs delivered the gut-punch: All Wright hit a contested three-pointer with under two minutes left, pushing Xavier's lead back to three points, 77-75, in what felt like the decisive blow.

After a final Xavier timeout, the team drew up a play for the win. The ball ended up in the hands of Wright fall away shot from the corner fell short in the final seconds. Tre Carroll rebounded the ball but was unable to convert as the game clock expired, leaving X with the reality of a devastating one-point loss.

Though the result registers as a loss, the second-half performance proved Xavier has the potential and grit to compete with top-tier, undefeated programs. The team will need to carry the defensive ferocity and offensive urgency they displayed in the final 20 minutes forward if they hope to turn close losses into signature wins as the season progresses.
