Xavier Musketeers men's basketball shot 50 percent from the field and placed four players in double figures, but a blistering first half from Providence Friars men's basketball proved too much to overcome in a 94–84 setback Tuesday night at Amica Mutual Pavilion.
Providence (13-15, 6-11 Big East) hit 58.1 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes, including 5-of-9 from three-point range, to build a 47–34 halftime advantage. The Friars never trailed in the second half, answering each Xavier push to keep the margin in double digits most of the way.
Xavier (13-15, 5-12 Big East) was paced by Roddie Anderson III, who poured in 27 points on an efficient 11-of-15 shooting in 32 minutes off the bench. Anderson attacked the paint all night, helping the Musketeers score 50 points in the lane.
Filip Borovicanin added 19 points and nine rebounds, while Jovan Milicevic chipped in 17 points, knocking down three three-pointers. Tre Carroll contributed 15 points and three assists as Xavier shot 60.6 percent in the second half in an effort to rally.
Providence countered with a balanced and explosive offensive effort. Jaylin Sellers led all scorers with 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Jason Edwards added 24 points off the bench, hitting four three-pointers and going 6-of-7 at the foul line. Jamier Jones contributed 19 points and seven rebounds, while Oswin Erhunmwunse controlled the interior with 10 points and 10 boards.
The Friars shot 54.1 percent for the game and a scorching 9-of-18 (50 percent) from three-point range. They also capitalized at the foul line, converting 19-of-25 attempts.
Xavier struggled from deep, connecting on just 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from beyond the arc. The Musketeers finished with 33 rebounds to Providence’s 34 and committed six turnovers, but were unable to overcome the early defensive lapses that allowed the Friars to build their cushion.
After trimming the deficit to eight midway through the second half, Xavier saw Providence respond with a series of inside finishes and timely threes to stretch the lead back to double figures. Anderson scored 15 of his 27 after halftime, but the Musketeers could not get enough stops down the stretch.
Xavier returns home on Saturday to take on Georgetown as it looks to snap its skid as Big East play enters its final stretch. Game time is set for 1:30pm.
