If there was ever a NBA player that matched his actual play with the type of player he thought he was or wanted to be, it is DWest.
From the article...
''For his part, West always wanted to pattern himself after former Spurs center David Robinson, his boyhood idol, a player who prized professionalism and productivity over flash. West also was a Spurs fan because, as he said, "They go about their business. They don't have to be flashy, all the bravado and stuff. Just get it done."

What a great article! I remember way way back when David signed his LOI with Xavier, that some guy in North Carolina posted a message on MM saying that we were getting someone far better than what the pundits were saying about him. West was not supposedly our best recruit that year, so that message really stuck in my memory as David began to blossom. Being underestimated has been West's motivation at every level, I think. Now no one underestimates him!
On a personal note, my son sent David a Muskie team guide, from West's senior year, the first year he was in the NBA. David sent it back signed with an inspiring personal note about the importance of staying in school. And when West came back to the area (against the Pacers) for the first time as a pro, my son and I attended the game as guests of Sr Rose Ann. The area where we sat probably held the entire town of Georgetown, Ohio. As David left the court to shower, he waved to all his hometown fans who all stayed until he came back out in his street clothes. And who did David make a beeline for when he came up to greet his fans? Sr Rose of course. He is one class act.

Xavier always goes to the NCAA tournament, and almost always makes some noise while there. Projecting anything less than that this season feels like folly--Eamonn Brennan (ESPN Summer Shootaround, 2012)

X man, great story. D West is a great X grad
I got lost at the Georgetown, Ohio reference. Isn't West from NC? Are we mixing Brian Grant, a G-town Ohio native?

Absolutely right, Carlos. I had a brain cramp. The Georgetown story was indeed about Brian Grant, another inspiring story out of the XU basketball machine.
