Game thread for Southern

Postby muskieman » Tue Dec 13, 2022 1:35 pm

The Southern University Jaguars are 4-5 this season Game begins at 7 PM FS1 with Matt Schumaker and LaVall Jordan radio is 700 WLW

Sean says he wants to see the team play at a high level after the Game on Saturday. Southern plays full-court basketball and forces a ton of turnovers. They have played Arizona, St Mary's, and most recently UNLV. Southern emphasizes full court on and forcing turnovers Against Zona they forced 19 turnovers, Against St Mary St Mary's 15 turnovers and UNLV had 16 turnovers,

Sean commented on Edwards and said he is trending in the right direction and he put Edwards in a bad situation against UC for the first time to get minutes. He has also said he has not given up on Miles or Edwards. Sean says he needs to develop our bench more which will be a key for the X team going forth. SO hope we get a big lead and they can play some tonight.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Depth could be an issue with this team in the BE. I’m sure Miles is a nice kid, but he is not a D1 basketball player. Edwards doesn’t get back on defense and is pretty limited. Miller pretty much said is his post game call with Byron and Joe that Hunter is the only bench player he can count on right now and that includes Claude. Starters have been playing a lot of mins and it showed in 2nd half at UC. A few wasted scholarships on this team.

Bench did not look great. Kraft made some shots prior to garbage time but the pullup off the pass without being set takes away from what would have been solid minutes. He caught the pass low with room to attack but instead pulled up for a relatively difficult wide open 3 attempt. 4 rebounds and assist on 3 for 7 shooting is good production but would have been great without that shot. He is a shooter and I want him shooting but that was unnecessarily difficult.

Hunter again gave good minutes and effort.

Tandy appears to be down on himself. He had a great start to the season. Has had few solid moments since coming off the bench. He needs to find his confidence. His numbers today were good, 2 rebounds, a block, 2 steals and 3 assists in 10 minutes. That is a great line but he didn't seem to feel good about it. X needs him to come in with energy and get after it. Contributing similar to the above but with confidence so that when he pulls up for a jumper, it has a good chance of going in. Missed shots happen but if they are good looks within the skillset of the player, it is unfortunate but a good shot. Similarly shots outside a player's skillset or forced are bad shots whether they go in or not.

Claude had a difficult day on offense.

Miles rebounded well. Edwards played better than the box score reflects. Hopefully both can get minutes in the next few games.

Kunkel had a bad day offensively.

The rest of the starters performed well.

This team needs dependable depth.

Miles has the worst footwork of any D1 big I have seen in a long time. And to think Steele said he could be BE defensive player of the year.

I think it is more that Miles lacks coordination rather than specifically a footwork issue. He probably should have signed up for ballet to improve his coordination. There is no fluidity to his movements. I don't see a ton of upside this year but any improvement is welcomed as there might be a situational need at some point. I like Edwards getting minutes as his upside is higher. I'm not sure he will be great against legit bigs but he is athletic and can move. Game experience can only help his development.

Agree on the lack of coordination, but I was trying to be nice. Miles just isn't a basketball player. Edwards didn't get back on defense on a few times (even when he lost his shoe) and Miller did not like it at all. We will have to add at least two bigs next year via the portal next year.
