All of these guys are very talented and could get serious playing time at most other D1 schools. I seriously doubt if any of them would have committed to Xavier if they thought they would be red shirted.

That's why Miller is the coach and not them. Someone will redshirt for the good of the team. If a player is only going to play 3-5 minutes a game as a freshman, he should redshirt. They can still practice.

I can't agree that if you are only going to play 3-5 minutes a game then you should redshirt. Part of the beauty of Xavier basketball is the four year development of the players. As a freshman you do not have to dominate. BJ probably averaged no more than five minutes as a freshman. Love averaged less.

You look at Kansas and a few other teams. They might have one freshman who gets major playing time and the others become role players. If all freshman played major minutes, we wouldn't need juniors and seniors.

We have a unique situation next year with three spots open--two at the guards. There is no reason to think that we could not have a rotation that has all playing some minutes, especially in the non-conference schedule, but we should not expect star status, like Burrell as a freshman, from any of them. You learn in practice and you improve in the off season.

Again, redshirting does not prevent one from practicing all season and "progressing" as a player.

You basically trade 3-5 minutes per game for 24-40 as a senior if you develop. Love should have redshirted two years ago.

Anderson, Brown, Raymond, Jackson and Love are going to play at lot of minutes next year. There will be two guys fighting for PT at PG and they a number of players picking up scraps. It is better to redshirt one or two guys to balance out the classes.

Derrick was a redshirt and it didn't stop him from progressing as a player, it gave him some time to adjust to the college game and develop basketball skills and not just rely on his athleticism. We are going to have 7 new guys next year to replace the 3 great seniors we are losing. I would rather have a guy that was only going to see action in half the games and earn 5 minutes of playing time in those games wait a year to develop their skills. Redford was the biggest player on his high school team and played against smaller less athletic competition. He might need a year to adjust to the college game, and redshirting would allow him to develop other skills that he would need besides his incredible shooting ability. I'm not saying that I think Redford should be the player to be redshirted, Sean will figure that out over the summer and fall, but it is unrealistic to think that no one is going to be redshirted next year. Sean said after Graves' freshmen season when Graves hardly played that he wished he could have redshirted Graves, so I don't think he wants to waste a year of a player's eligibility if they will only be playing slightly more than the walk ons.

And just how far do you think we would have gotten in A-10 play or The Dance (if we got there) had Love redshirted last year and came into this season with zip experience?

And, as mentioned earlier, D Brown did not have the physique to do what he has been able to do the last two years if he had not redshirted and built his body to the point he could bang underneath.

But having all these outstanding recruits sure is a nice problem.

I don't think Love's 2.8 minutes of PT as a freshman prepared him for the next year. Practice is where he grew not in mop up time.

Of course we all selfishly think it would be great if one of the freshman guards redshirted next year.

Again, I just don't think anyone will redshirt. It takes a willing kid, which is pretty rare and unique, and unique circumstances for that to happen.

Holloway is a late committment. NO WAY he will redshirt when there were 8 other schools wanting him after he got out of his LOI with IU.

Frease....NO.

Lyons WILL NOT redshirt. He is a rare athlete at 6'1 who can handle the ball and has great scoring ability. He will see time at PG and SG.

Redford won't redshirt either. I've read a lot about him and have read plenty of quotes from him saying he expects to come in and contribute as a freshman. I don't see Sean redshirting Michigan Mr. Basketball so he can work on his defense. That makes no sense when the kid can come in for 5-8 minutes (valuable experience), possibly more and nail a jumper from just about anywhere once the ball crosses halfcourt. He also shot 97% from the free throw line this past year.

I don't see any of these freshman coming in and playing 30 minutes a game. They will all get some minutes at either the PG position or the SG position, some more than others.

Again, the ONLY reason Derrick Brown redshirted was because he was young for his class. He was 17 when he got to Xavier and was a toothpick.

You really think Sean planned on redshirting one of them before Holloway committed but now that we've added one more guard, one of the other kids might have to sit a year?

I wouldn't blame any of them for not wanting to redshirt and I wouldn't hold it against them either. Who would want to redshirt while they watch 3 other guys who are in the same class play?

Sean is recruiting kids that expect to be able to play as freshman. They aren't projects.

Sean will give them every chance to earn minutes in practice, and if they can contribute in the 7 or 8 minutes they see, I say great.

Miller makes the decisions not the players. Someone will redshirt.

The main reason I think Redford won't redshirt is his free throw shooting ability. There are plenty of other reasons why he shouldn't, and plenty of reasons why he should redshirt, but when Xavier has a 2 point lead and the ball with 20 seconds left in the game, Sean is definitely going to want to have his best free throw shooter eligible to come into the game.
