Flying Standby

Anyone know the specifics regarding flying standby? There is an American flight out of Cincy tomorrow that has alot of empty seats. Are the fares discounted for standby fliers? Can you check bags (golf clubs) when flying standby? Any help would be greatly appreciated....I've been on hold with AA for an hour now.

We just flew standby to Peurto Rico an I'll probably not do it again. You must check in and they send your baggage and clubs through on the flight you're on standby, whether or not you make the flight. Sometimes you can ask the gate agent what your chances are of getting on the flight, but they may not be able to help you.

If there are plenty of seats, I wouldnt worry about it. The problem is if youre standby on your second leg, thats troublesome. Ive never had great luck flying standby at an airline's mjor hub (like DFW or ORD for AA). Usually the gate agents will be up front with you if you are polite to them, although most will include something about how it is no guarantee, etc

just hope for clear weather...
