New way to show disappointment with coaching strategy?

John Feinstein was on Tony Kornheiser's show this morning, and in the discussion of what was a midmajor and what wasn't, they ended up discussing Memphis, Gonzaga, and George Mason.

Feinstein, in saying that Memphis' history was way too strong to justify midmajor status, said that Dana Kirk's coaching of Memphis in its 1985 Final Four loss to Villanova may have been "the single worst coaching job in college basketball history". He then mentioned that Kirk later went to jail, but added "not for his coaching, of course".

Kornheiser then chimed in with "wouldn't it be great if coaches could go to jail for lousy coaching jobs?". I can see it now, "Judge Griffin, what is your verdict?".

Jim Boeheim deserves at least ten years for that performance last night. Enormous yet uncoachable talent combined with the worst active coach equals blowing a big lead to UMASS in your building.

Boeheim deserves to be waterboarded for that effort last night. Prison would not be 'torture' enough.

Given that Kirk's performance was so bad, did anyone consider that he might have thrown the game? Was the performance really that bad? I don't remember the game.

Good, but sad, article about what became of that '84-'85 Memphis team. Things turned out badly for quite a few of them.

As to Kirk, the article's brief mention of him states
" Kirk was fired in 1986, leaving the school on probation for a variety of offenses; he was later sentenced to one year in jail after he was found guilty of tax evasion and obstruction of justice."
