Stepping down
Conte Stamas, varsity basketball coach at Lyons Township the last nine seasons, has announced his retirement from coaching. Stamas came to Lyons from Evanston, where in six seasons his teams won 20 games three times. After his first Lyons team went 9-16 in 1999-2000, his next one went 28-5, defeated a Proviso East team led by Dee Brown and Shannon Brown for the sectional title and finished fourth in the state after losing to eventual Class AA champ Schaumburg by a point in the semifinal.

Stamas' teams won regional titles in 2005 and again this season, when the Lions (24-5) reached the sectional finals before losing to Class 4A champion Richards.
