A St. Raymond high school basketball player was arrested Tuesday afternoon after an altercation with a coach during a team meeting at the school, according to a police source.
A witness said junior Kevin Parrom punched Ravens head coach Oliver Antigua in the face after the two had a brief argument in the locker room.
A person close to Parrom said the player was provoked by Antigua.
"Kevin isn't going to hit somebody if he doesn't feel threatened," the source said.
Neither Antigua or Parrom, 17, could be reached for comment. No charges had been filed as of last night.
Shortly after the incident, there was a 911 call from the Bronx school. Police arrived and arrested Parrom. Antigua did not need medical treatment, according to the witness.
Parrom, a 6-6 small forward, averaged 14.5 points and nine rebounds for the Ravens last season.

Musketeerscoop.com really likes Parrom as a player, but he may have baggage as a person. Apparently, he's withdrawing from St. Raymond's.

Re: Parrom-XU recruit
He is defintely not XU material. This kid may be a good player but unfortunately on the personal side he has some problems. I'm somewhat familiar with the New York Catholic League Schools and I can tell you that St. Raymond's was always a very well respected institution that produced good basketball players amd good citizens until lately. The school under coach Orlando Antigua has strong ties to AAU teams in NYC among them the Gauchos. The kids heavily involved in those AAU programs do not have the same respect for their schools or their HS coaches, be it publc or parochial, because they have the connection to the AAU to fall back on. The NCAA's biggest mistake was making peace with the AAU. The AAU clubs are messing with stable HS basketball programs in this area pushing HS coaches completely out of the recruiting picture, telling the parents just what they want to hear. One prominent Catholic HS program was due to return four starters and compete for the NYC & NYS Championship this past year. Mysteriously the four transferred over the summer to public schools run by coaches well connected to the AAU. It's kind of like "He Got Game" only the question is now: "Where are going to HS? It's the most important decision you will ever make" The whole AAU things stinks in my mind and XU should avoid it like the plague

Re: Parrom-XU recruit
This is really old news. From everything I've heard, X considers this incident a non-factor in his recruitment, and Parrom is one of our top 3-4 targets. What personal problems are you aware of? Beyond this incident, what do you know? Sorry to be nosy, but I don't like when people just make blanket claims.
Sorry if you don't like the AAU landscape, but that's just the way it is. I don't really care much for it either, but there isn't a legitimate big-time basketball program that doesn't deal with it. Meaning, if we avoid AAU, we avoid making Final 4's.

I agree w/MillerTime. We live in a ttime where any altercation makes national news thanks to You Tube and Recruiting services.
MANY of Xavier bball players had bad incidents in their HS past and nobody batted an eye.
It comes down to will this player work in Miller's system and help X win. Winning is the bottom line. And sadly money is not far from the bottom line either.
Simply stated, if X wants to be top 25 year in and out, X must recruit at-risk players given the league, history and city X plays in.
Now, if you want a clean and high moral program, Cheer for ivy league schools. Its a cut throat business and X's pr machine is fantastic.
Xavier does not graduate players, they give players tools so that they choose to graduate or not commit to Xavier.

I'm all for acknowledging that the times, they are a-changing, and have been for years, and that we shouldn't hold kids to unrealistic standards of off-the-court conduct.
But even in this day and age, punching your coach has to at least give X something to think about, whether that ultimately changes their approach to Parrom or not.

Yep, no doubt. I've heard several stories about this...under no circumstance should he have hit his coach, but I've heard the coach's behavior was less than perfect as well. It does sound messy. We just have to have the confidence that the coaches know the kid well enough to say that this is an isolated incident, because that's the only choice we have. We are still recruiting him...

This is the most idiotic thing I have ever read on this board to date. To suggest that XU MUST recruit AT-RISK players given the league (please explain what this means), and the city X plays in (please, please explain what the hell you mean by that statement) than the program will be nothing more than a glorified high school for people who can play basketball shielded by a completely different set of rules and standards both social and academic for all but 13 individuals. If we decide to take that path than we will sooner or later become no better than the schools big and small, public and private who get repeatedly bashed on this board.
I am however confident that the Admin and the coach will not let that happen, unless you want Xavier to become a PROGRAM AT RISK given the league, hIstory and the city within which we play????
We just got done with one AT-Risk Player and he iced his XU career in fine fashion don't you think?

We also have the choice to discontinue our pursuit of him.

Re: Parrom-XU recruit
JKC74 I could not agree more. I am sometimes amazed at what Keith writes. The most important date of the year for Xavier basketball happens in mid May. This year it was May 17. The three seniors graduated that day. I support Xavier basketball, because of May 17. Winning is very cool, selection Sunday is great, beating the snot out of Dayton is priceless, but caps and gowns are more important and always must be. There are plenty of schools with no or low graduation rates, Keith might look to follow Memphis State. It would be naïve to think that X doesn’t get the occasional at risk kid, but to opine that X must go that way to compete in the city, come on, X has done well so far without offering degrees in welding.
