NCAA tells Indiana to delay response to new allegation
Sep. 16, 2008
CBSSports.com wire reports

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The NCAA has told Indiana to wait until Sept. 26 to respond to the latest allegation that the school failed to monitor its men's basketball program.

In a letter to IU president Michael McRobbie, NCAA infractions committee chairwoman Josephine Potuto said Tuesday the committee is still finalizing part of its report on former coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff, who were accused of making more than 100 impermissible phone calls to recruits.

The response originally was due Wednesday.

"The University was fully prepared to meet its deadline established by the NCAA in its response to the failure to monitor allegation," athletic director Rick Greenspan said in a statement. "However, based upon the September 16 letter from the NCAA Committee on Infractions, we will work on final edits and submit on the new date required."

Last month, IU said it would submit a written response rather than request a second hearing with the infractions committee to answer the newest charge in the phone-call scandal. The allegation that the university did not properly monitor the basketball program was the fifth major accusation by the NCAA.

Sampson accepted a contract buyout in February, and none of his assistants were retained when Tom Crean was named coach April 1. Also, all but two players from last year's team have left the program, and athletic director Rick Greenspan announced a reorganization of his department and said he would resign at the end of the year.

Indiana has not been found guilty of a major NCAA violation in any program since 1960.

I'm not up on my NCAA elegibility proceedures, but how could the delay affect a determination on Crawford? The facts of his leaving and asking for an exemption for this season would not turn on the details of the Indiana situation, would it?

Carlos .. The NC2A could, repeat, could make eligible immediately any player who left IU under these circumstances. They had nothing to do with the "crimes" and staying under severe (expected, but then they belong to a BCS conference) probations.

Other posters had opined that, based on the NCAA's rulings in the past, it was more likely to give immediate eligibility to transfers where the school under investigation (IU, in this case) had already gotten pretty severe sanctions levied against it. Basically, if the sanctions would expire after the players' eligibility, they would be allowed to play right away at their new school. If not, then the players would have to sit out a year as per normal circumstances.

One factor would seem to be that the transfers weren't involved in the activities leading to Sampson's dismissal and IU's likely sanctions.

does the NCAA need any reason to delay or speed up decisions? Like a computers they run in their own time continuum.

I have a problem with an organization like NCAA that has rulebooks that could prop open a bank door. They expect everyone but themselves to be held to those rules which no other group does....oops, I forgot about congress.

Humbly, I ask one question. Has an appeal even been filed with the NCAA committee on eligibility asking that the one-year transfer rule sit-out be waived in the cases of all IU basketball transfers this calender year?
Every story I have seen on Crawford including Sean's quotes has said "Xavier is considering asking that Jordan Crawford be included in the transfers seeking a waiver of the sit-out rule from the NCAA." It has not said such a ruling has been filed or have I missed a story stating that fact?

Above is the link for Andy Katz's discussion of the situation, and X has apparently not filed an appeal yet.

You wonder if they are watching to see how other schools appeals turn out. Timing is everything, I guess. Letting it linger might mean new revelations might be coming about IU??????

There is precedence in our own league of the NCAA making a player eligible immediately after the school has been announced to be on probation. Charles Burch signed to play at SBU in the fall of 2003 (AFTER the scandal occurred in March of that year). The sanctions against SBU were not announced until February of 2004, but after they were, Burch asked for and received a release from his LOI from SBU. The NCAA ruled Burch eligible to play for Providence in the 2004-2005 season.

SBU, refresh our memories, what was the punishment for SBU.

I ask because if the penalty would have prohibited the player from ever playing in the post season because there was a post season punishment for the school then I can see the player getting a release.
