TBT at Cintas

Postby muskieman » Mon Jul 18, 2022 11:20 pm

Good night for Zip Em Up as they crushed Sweet Home Alabama 94-61. Matt Stainbrook, Kaiser Gates and Semaj Christon each had 13 points while Trevon Bluiett and JP Macura each had 11 points and Nate had 10. Not to be outdone by anyone JP had a technical foul and tears were seen and the crowd blew up when BJ Raymond hit a 3-pointer toward the end of the game. Kaiser Gates was a dunkin g machine tonight.

Their next game is Wednesday night at 8 p.m.when Zip Em UP takes on Sideline Cancer after SC beat Defeat Diabetes. Remy Able plays on SC but their star is former South Dakota State star Mike Daum who scored 31 and had 9 points.

Scruggs was wearing Mark Lyons jersey as Lyons suffered an injury a few days ago and will not be able to play this year
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Fun atmosphere and a better crowd than I expected. If you’re in driving distance- consider joining the fun Wed eve. ( you can thank me later). Honestly, Semaj was tonight’s MVP. Ran the O, and barked out commands. Which was much needed as play can get rag-tag and undisciplined at times. He drove, he dished and he scored at will when he did decide to shoot it.
And yes, BJ stole the show. Funny thing was, Matt Stainbrook ( who played well and within himself), looked like he lost 80 pounds- and BJ looked like he found them!!! Great times at the ‘Tas.!

Fun game to watch. I agree Christon was the star of the game and they will need him if they want to win on Wednesday since we really don't have a backup PG. Too bad Christon couldn't develop a three point shot because he would be the prototype NBA guard. Not sure what happened to Trevon in a year but he was out of shape and could not even tuck in his shirt. Hard to believe he was fighting for a chance to be on the Pelicans roster last year. Gates had some nice dunks as well. Too bad Farr and Reynolds are not playing they could help defensively since they are playing with the European rules on defense.

Fun game to watch. Zip’s roster has been built for the 3-pt shot and a quick paced game. With Kanter on the floor there are always four guys who can rebound, take off, dribble and shoot 3’s. Unfortunately the 3 was not falling, but Alabama was worse with the 3.

JP was JP! That’s why the XU fans love him and the opponents hate him. Always in one’s face; a little push here and there; great passer and always sprinting to the basket. Fan favorite!

Kanter and Stainbrook should stay around and give Zach some mentoring. They know how to play with someone on their backs and both showed a 3-pointer—-and more importantly they shot going toward the basket not away (floaters) and both used the backboard. I really think that Zach is more “athletic” then both of them and has the potential to be a terrific complement to Nunge but Karem and Matt use their bodies extremely well to both rebound and score inside. (Matt had 2 inside baskets, being guarded closely, that he shot up and over the defender off the backboard.) Zach has two more years to get stronger and gain experience. He might be an inch or two shorter than Kanter but he has the quickness advantage to be a great 4.

Hope the team can win two more at the Cintas Center. Bring the regional back next year. Great summer teaser for XU basketball junkies.

Final 89-81 with the final Sling shot winning shot by JP 3, he crossed over stepback against his buddy Mike Daum. Too many questionable 3s but in the last 4 minutes, Zip did get 2, 4-point plays one by Tre and one by Kanter. Sister Rose ann plastered the zip-em-up sign on the winning board tonight. Round 3 Thursday night at 7 pm. SC was unstoppable driving. Keene for the Sideline Cancer team was also unstoppable I stopped counting when he got to 24. Name of the game in the first part of the game was transition basketball and they almost ran Sideline off the court for a while. CJ Miles kept them in the game until Keene came back after injuring his ankle. Kanter scored big in the first quarter leading Zip and ended up with 21 points.

JP's "Sling Shot" deep bucket to win the game was sweet. Will help gloss over the fact that this was not JP's finest game. Too many forced low % shots and just plain poor & lazy D. He made a few trademark hustle plays and fancy passes, so there were plenty of positives. Fortunately Coach Carter had the stones to bench him early in 2nd half in favor of LaChance, who quite honestly saved the day with 9 clutch points when Sideline Cancer had gained the lead and momentum. Just think how tough Zip Em could be if JP and Trevon can both play well at the same time. Kanter was fab and really rebounds well. Nate took one dumb shot but overall played well, especially on D. Semaj had an off 1st half but came on to shine at clutch time. Gritty win over a talented and experienced squad. Now the top seed. Will need everyone playing "Team" ball as opposed to "Hero" ball tonight to advance.
bottom line, this has been a fun and interesting ride. Nice summer distraction!
