Musketeer Football

The Musketeer gridiron gang took to the field on Tues, Sept. 23rd against the Tri-State Sharks; a semi-professional team from the Cincinnati area. Due to the postponement of the Mt. St. Joseph game to due the winds last Sunday, this was Xavier's first game of the season. The defense did not look as spectacular as last year, but still solid none-the-less. More importantly, the offense showed up to play with strong leadership from the entire front line. Xavier secured the victory 20-9 over a team that had been playing all summer. This makes it 5 straight wins for the Muskies. It was a great test and bodes well for the Musketeers as they will play several division 3 teams this year and a division 2 team mixed in along with their conference play. Keep it up Muskies, you make us all proud!

It still seems odd to see those words together-"Musketeer football"-after all these years. Our team generally blew my last 3 years at X, but it was fun heading over to Corcoran on a nice fall afternoon or evening, drinking in the sparsely-populated stands, and then some more afterwards at Dana's.

Good times standing at the top of the stadium and watch the Marines tattoo the Muskies but knowing the later that evening a Mountie or OLC lady would soothe your feelings.

I know it can't happen, but somebody tell me why the soccer field where Corcoran field used to be can't be used when soccer isn't using it?
Does the club sport no longer become a club sport when it's on school property? Or is there some insurance problem involved?
And aren't there still locker rooms in old Schmidt ? Or don't the showers work in there any more?
Agree with Gary and MM, it would be nice to drop over on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon and just watch.
And maybe bring a six-pack of cans in a small cooler and share the brews with friends. I'd put a Diet Coke in there for me. Hell, I'd even pay for parking.
I've worked at Shea Field and believe me, it's no Corcoran of Olde, or new.
It would just be fun to sit in the stands for a while and scream for the Muskies.
I've told the story of the last game the Marines played at Xavier and lost, if I recall correctly. But you're right. There were some awesome teams of gyrenes.

And then some more in a friend's barracks room in Ratterman's Swamp and even later a nightcap of J&B on the floor at Mrs. Stits boarding house before falling asleep with a rolled up jacket for a pillow.

Q:

Dont hold me to this but I am sure the reason the club football team does not use Corcoran is due to the wear and tear. Recently X spent a large chunk of money to upgrade this field, drainage, etc. for the soccer teams. Both teams train and play on this field. The grass is a perfect "soccer" grass and can get "choppy" and "worn" with overusage. The extra wear and tear on the field would cost X alot more money each year that just isnt in the budget. The club soccer team used to use the field for some practices but I am not even sure they do anymore. It boils down to keeping the field in top condition for the varsity soccer teams and the cost it would add if the club football team played there also.

It's kind of sad that football can't use a field so that soccer can? Quick question: which sport would you rather watch on a fall afternoon or evening? I thought so.

While I see your point, you also have to understand the financial side of things. The athletic department has a budget and has to stay within it each year and with as many varsity teams as they have, that is not easy. The varsity sports will always take precedent over a club sport. That is just the business aspect of things. Be it right or wrong, it is the bottom line.

There are many different reasons for the football team not being able to use the field. I don't know the official reason, but both varsity soccer teams use it, as well as club sports teams that have been around for a lot longer than the club football team. Football would also wear the field a lot faster than other sports, and I'm sure the club coach would prefer to practice on a field that actually has football yard lines on it. I don't know if this has anything to do with the situation either, but I'm pretty sure whoever schedules the events for the field must generate a certain amount of money by renting the field out to high school club teams and other things of that nature that need a field.
