Impressive win.

Xavier has come out of the gate with a very strong club level team.

You would think that a school with Miami's enrollment would put together a more competitive club team than a school having a quarter to one fifth that enrollment.

Dash:

This is only Miami's 2nd year playing club football. I atten ded their first game ever last year when they hosted Xavier in Oxford. Talking to one of their coaches before the game, I expressed how impressed I was by the ir numbers (4& players suited up). He told me that their practices do not include that many day to day but I guess like Xavier the team has to deal with classes, part-time jobs, floating practice schedules, etc..

I do not know Miami's roster number this year but I did hear that due to a fall break, some of Miami's players went home.
I do know that Miami players pay a fee to play and it would seem that most would stay to play against X but again, I do not know how many were missing.

That being said, I was impressed by Miami's play. Greenwood's 69 yd TD pass to Dan Deters on X's first play of the game could have been deflating yet the Redskins marched down for a touchdown on the next series including converting on a 4th and 15 inside X's 20.

Had Miami not coughed up a couple of fumbles (on nice tackles made by X defenders) perhaps the outcome would not have been 20-7. As in many games, turnovers kill drives as X learned in the 6 turnover loss at Lincoln last week.

All in al, it was a very good football game that I think those in attendance enjoyed immensely.

nick,

Thanks for the updates. It's nice to get a little 'reporting' from the games.

Is Tom Powers enjoying this gig? How long do you see him sticking with the team? He seems like he has been instrumental in bringing Xavier's club team out of the gate strongly.

Dash:

Tom does not get a great deal of compensation for this gig; he is also a teacher but he has told me on a number of times that he would love to be a full time football coach at Xavier if things could work out that way. He does a lot for the club team; and he also has a number of assistant coaches in their second year who volunteer their time to coach with this team.

Their enthusiasm and commitment is remarkable considering the amount of time it takes to coach both on the field as well as preparing plays, reviewing game film, etc.. Assistant coaches like Jim Clardy and Aaron Szabo, as far as I know, do not have any particular ties to Xavier but their love of football is obvious and their effort and instruction to the team are invaluable to the team's success.

I hope we can keep them all around for years.
