Agree If Dez isn't back we are screwed and will be watching March Madness without Xavier again next year He's by far our best returning player. He has his liabilities but his pluses far out number those. Sorry to see Kachi leave but not surprised.I wish he had played more.I think if he would stay he could develope into a solid player but the days of guys staying around and developing are over. No more Jason Loves or BJ Raymonds which is sadlionelchalmers0 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 21, 2024 8:33 pmI’m honestly confused on the whole Claude take by so many. Is he perfect? No. But he’s a big guard that’s pretty capable overall and was by far our best player getting to the basket and best player in the mid range. He was also a sophomore who went from deep role player to THE MAN early in the season and our second leading scorer by the end. The people wanting him to go blow my mind. Q is already gone. If Claude is gone you really expect us to replace the whole back court again and think it’ll be any more effective than this year?
Also…. If you think des is gonna get too much in NIL to keep him, how on earth do you think we’re gonna bring in two new guards and a whole new front court that have MORE talent? We’re just gonna find guys happy to take less to come to a school that went 16-18 this year?
In my opinion to make any kind of jump next year we absolutely need des, dayvion, trey, and swain. I’d keep lazar bc I think he has some stretch 4 potential. The rest of the front court can take off. Get a rebounder/athlete/defender 5 and a shooter type. And get one more 3 point shooter.

Re: Portal time and names
The recent court ruling has given great incentive for marginal and great players to test the portal. They can leverage their current NIL compensation to get more $ by testing the mkt, w/o penalty, as any really good player will be welcomed back to their school, assuming the spot is still available. Only 15-or so teams like Texas, Miami & N Carolina can afford to buy 2-3 high caliber players annually, while paying their core to stay as well.
I expect at least half of the players to test the porta. lTo my understanding, X has a healthy NIL, but can't afford to spend $500k on Claude. Frankly, he isn't worth it, either. I trust Miller will be able to fins undervalued gems. Hopefully, Miller had an epiphany about the need to improve his player management with the unexpected portal entry of Nzeh. He needs to adapt to the new era.

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Re: Portal time and names
This year was a major re building year and it did not work out. Next year will also be a re building year for various reasons. There is no way to know what next year will bring for the program. Need 3 real good scorers to win, not one or two. Need good team chemistry and good back up players to support the 3 good scorers. Right now, not sure who comes back and who the new players are and will it work out. Next year is just one big question mark. The BE was supposed to get 5 teams in to March Madness and the Committee gave the BE 3 spots in MM. Right now X is no where near being a top 3 team in the BE. Things have to change in various ways. The coach is fine...the players need to be better.

Re: Portal time and names
LOL Claude wants 500,000 dollars , a NBA shooting coach and a personal trainer. Does he want fries with that too? How about a Drill Sargent to teach him some defense. How about getting the film on his buddy Colby Jones. Jones played hard and with passion and took pride in his defense. Jones averaged about 6-7 hustle plays a game. Deflections, helping out on defense, diving on the floor. Little things yet big things that don't show up on the scoreboard. I know Claude was our best player but he should be thankful he was allowed to play thru 76 turnovers , Taking 113 three point shots while shooting 23% from the 3 point line and playing uninspired unalert defense. He routinely went under screens to let his man take open three point shots or got buried by the screener . He played with zero awareness or focus on defense. I don't believe he can get away with that on another top 40 team. He was able to really grow at Xavier because of our roster this year. He actually played very good defense his freshman year so I know he can do it. If another school wants to give him everything he wants than he should take the offer. We will be fine with or without him. If we start giving players everything they want wait till we get a really good player. I think Claude is at best a top 125 player. Good player but not close to elite or All league. I would love to have him back but I would not give him everything he wants.

Re: Portal time and names
I'd love to have Claude, McKnight, Nze, Green, Lazar and Swain back. Nze has very good potential. Green will likely figure out how to score and defend at a reasonable level. Lazar has good upside and Swain is already a legit contributor with offensive upside.
McKnight is generally very consistent, making few mistakes most games.
Claude's shooting has to get better as it statistically couldn't get much worse. The defensive lapses could partly be a product of the team just being bad defensively. He has a knack for scoring in the mid range and getting to the rim. The 500 seems crazy to me but athletes get paid crazy amounts so maybe it is reasonable. I couldn't imagine paying that to Claude but X needs to figure out a strategy for building a team and then reloading rather than rebuilding. The injuries to Hunter and Free seem to be setting this team back years. Had they been healthy, X makes the tournament and most are looking to stay in a winning program. Attracting new players also becomes easier.
There are a number of defensive oriented teams in the tournament this year. If X has to rebuild, there are multiple ways to get back to where we want to be. If the offensive talent all requires big money then go after great athletes and/or defensive minded players and modify style of play to fit the players' skillset.

Re: Portal time and names
Whether it is recruiting freshmen or portal transfers , it seems next year is just another rebuilding year. The big question is will the new bodies have team chemistry and talent at each position. X needs 3 players that can score double digits each game and at least 2 big men that can guard and bang under the baskets. Play was inconsistent last year.

Re: Portal time and names
Without a big name coach, the program will suffer for years. Miller will draw players. Any unkown coach will not draw the best of players. The best of coaches get very good players. X lately is missing MM too much....players are looking for a program that plays in MM consistently.

Re: Portal time and names
Regarding Claude’s defensive liabilities let me just say that defense in today’s game is a team concept and other than Mcknight our team defense was not good. We were poor switching ball screens, closing out on shooters and protecting the rim. It was not just Claude. Regarding the 500k NIL money it is the Wild West. If we want to bea prominent program we must strap on our six shooter and join the madness. I don’t like it but that is the way it is.

Cant afford to rebuild again next year. Any way you slice it. This year was a failure.Xavier2005 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2024 10:08 amWhether it is recruiting freshmen or portal transfers , it seems next year is just another rebuilding year.
