Re: UConn game thread
We need to stay poised and make our foul shots. U Conn is in foul trouble and we need to keep driving to the basket.

Had it all the way Good tough gritty win
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Re: UConn game thread
Tonight,
I didn’t watch in the comfort of the luxury Moderator’s Suite as I normally do but watched the game in the stands. Cintas was rocking early. I haven’t watched the replay, but it seems like X got a friendly whistle for a change, and I’m one who hates to assign blame to refs. I think most of the time it evens out. Some random observations:
It was a rare night when McKnight was a little loose with the ball, but he had a couple of bad T.O.s I think he ended up with 10, but his shots always seemed to come at a critical time, even the ill-advised rainbow he hit in the 1st to stop a UConn run, and an underappreciated 2 at the end of the half to cut it to one. The guys ran to the locker room pretty spirited.
Swain continues to improve every game. He was equally impressive on D, as he was on offense. Payer of the game again.
SM did a really smart thing by isolating both Mchaney (sp?) and Karaban. I don’t know how many he made before he fouled out, but he has always been a thorn in X’s side. Three of his fouls came against Hunter.
SM had a great game plan, but again, burned timeouts way too early. He called one before the 16:00 minute mark in the 2nd, and another around the 9-minute mark. I had a bad feeling it was going to cost X in the end. When UConn pressed in the last 3, thankfully X didn’t have an issue getting it in. SM made a nice adjustment from the MQ game, by throwing it to Swain as opposed to a smaller guard.
Hunter played great. Two top game at X in his career, considering the stakes.
Maddox did what he would have done all year if he played more. He came in with the most street cred among Boum, Olivari, and Conwell in terms of his three-point shooting and scoring ability (40% the last two years), but he is a high-volume high minutes-player. It’s hard adjusting to playing less than half the amount of time you’re accustomed to and taking about 1/3 of the shots. I don’t blame SM for not playing him more, because you can’t have three guys in at 6’3” or smaller, in Maddox, McKnight, and Conwell, especially when you don’t have a rim protector, and have an undersized four. However, when Foster, who I like, gives nothing offensively, you have to play Maddox….and Miller did.
I thought a couple of Karaban’s fouls were suspect, but again, it’s time for X to finally have the whistle go our way. I may change my mind when watching the replay.
X’s D was really good. They switched very well, and with the exception of Free over helping, they made UConn settle for more jumpers than they did in the 1st matchup.
Three key plays of the game:
1. Great switching in the last 30 that caused the shot clock to go out sealing the W.
2. Maddox hitting and “And 1” trey to stem MQ’s momentum.
3. With 3 min or so left in the game, Mcknight got Sampson on a switch, backed out to take him out of the lane, and threw Free a pass for a bucket. So cerebral.
If X takes care of business at home and doesn’t suffer any bad losses, they’re in the Tourney. Who would have thought that 8 days ago?

Anti Homer excellent post. I agree totally with your analysis of the game. I also agree with you regarding Sean’s use of time outs. He is a great coach so I will give him the benefit of the doubt but I like you believe he needs to value those TO’s more than he does. ParticulRly with our problems closing games out. Go X!!! We are still alive.

Re: UConn game thread
I too was at the game and the crowd was awesome. I kept wondering if the refs were calling a lot of ticky tac fouls on UConn just to tick off off Hurley or shut him up. Most impressed that players stepped up to do the scoring with Conwell blanketed the entire game by their defense. Great win and with all the minutes played still found the energy to get a shot clock violation in the final seconds. Best 40 minute effort this year IMO. Go Muskies.

Re: UConn game thread
Nice to beat U Conn and Hurley. Great coaching job by Miller and tremendous effort by the players. Swain was huge in the first half but ended up with three turnovers and only 3 rebounds. He is capable of much more on the boards. I do think Karaban ended up with a couple cheap fouls but he has received plenty of cheap fouls thru the years against us. Happy to see Hunter have some offense success. Maddox seems to have one good game followed by 3-4 poor ones. He does like playing against U Conn. Freemantle is our best player but seems to wear out at the end of games. He was very tired the last ten minutes of the game. Also he needs to quit shooting threes. He is aiming them instead of shooting with confidence. I disagree with Anti-homer on McKnight. He is the heart and soul of the team and we would have ZERO chance without him last night. He pace and effort on both ends was unmatched by anyone on the floor. We are headed down the home stretch with 10 games left with at least 8 of them vs good teams. I think we need to win 7 of them to have any chance to make the tournament. Nice to see us win close games at the end. Go X.
