I know. Catchy title.
The imminent Revenue Sharing era will be a beautiful thing: if you’re in a basketball only power conference. One analyst posted that some BE programs can top $7M on a roster. Football will limit most in P4 to $2-4M. This is corroborated by what GA recently announced, which was that they will allocate the $20M as follows: 70% football, 15% basketball ($3M), 5% all others. There are coaches in the Big Ten saying, 'Hey, I think football's going to swallow up all my money and I may need to get out.' "
The article below goes into greater detail:
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/c ... 539403007/
It discusses the NCAA's recent decision to implement a revenue-sharing model for college athletics, allowing schools to distribute up to $20.5 million annually to their athletes. This change aims (so they say) to address financial disparities between sports programs and enhance competitiveness, particularly in men's basketball. The move is part of a broader shift in college sports, including the approval of a $2.8 billion settlement in the House v. NCAA lawsuit (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/c ... 262729007/), which permits direct payments to athletes and introduces a revenue-sharing plan, which I alluded to in the NIL thread a couple of days ago.
In a nutshell, the article suggests that the NCAA’s new revenue-sharing model significantly benefits basketball-only schools like those in the Big East, which don’t have major football programs. Imo and many others who understand the shift much better than I do, it will give the best conference in CBB in the last decade, even a greater advantage.
Greg Christopher, the Xavier athletics director, said he does not expect the conversion from an NIL-based payment system to revenue-sharing will dramatically change the amount of money Big East schools have been investing in their men’s basketball rosters.
Based on his conversations with colleagues in the four autonomy conferences, "the Big East has been competitive with the football schools in NIL and will remain so under revenue-sharing." That’s an understatement!
“I sense top to bottom that we're probably directionally in the same bucket,” Christopher said. “I haven’t heard of anybody being (an outlier) one way or another. But we have sat around a table and talked through that basketball is our highest priority from a revenue-sharing standpoint.
"We don’t have football, so we don't have the expenses that come with that. We also don’t have $70 million in annual media-rights revenue. But if the governor is ultimately the (revenue-sharing cap) and not having to feed football and all that comes with that, it does help us prioritize our basketball programs.”
The gist of the article is that schools who prioritize football and perhaps spend $18 million of the $20 million (if that's what it ends up being) on football, then they won't have as much left over from basketball, which will allow the basketball centric schools the chance to sort of level the playing field. And, it's not wrong.
Dilemma for power football conferences like the Big10, ACC< & SEC:
Question: How will power league basketball programs compete with the Big East spending in Year 2 and beyond?
Answer: “It’s a problem”, said as SEC athletic director. “Nova & St. John’s can pour $10M into basketball if they want. The SEC isn’t going to be able to do that because we cannot sacrifice the cash cow of football.”

I don't think the schools in the Big 10 or SEC are just gonna say "Oh well"... They'll make up the difference somehow... Dan

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Players will still be allowed to seek NIL deals outside of what the programs offer... I'm not sure if coaches/ schools will be allowed to assist a player, but I'm sure there are boosters that will step up and sign a player to hawk Chevrolets...
