why must the A10 be a stepping stone

Postby brownlavender » Wed Apr 02, 2008 1:38 am

I'm tired of seeing good A10 coaches leaving for bottom level big 6 jobs. After seeing oliver purnell at clemson it kind of hit me this year that the A10 is a starting coaches job mecca for hitting the jackpot. Well Sean, if he stays and i see no reason he will leave, will recieve about 1.5mil next year. Granted were not BCS schools who also can rely on football money but I think if everybody takes our lead, IE... St louis and their Tubby, Dayton and Gregory and all the other A10 coaches that may garner attention these next few years, the A10 could really become a basketball powerhouse. Give it 2 cycles of players and if the coaches stay, asking a lot i know, we could easily compete with the big 6. If this were to be the case we would see more national tv money as well as better recruits for the whole league. If possible drop our bottom 4 teams and basically make another Big 10. We need to continually schedule big conference teams the way we did this year and beat them year in and year out to show we can be the premier bball conference in america. It really comes down to money and somehow we need to generate the way the football schools do, via personal contributions or whatever. the stronger the league the better the recruits and better competition. I'm no genius but if we are to become a powerhouse I think the rest of the league needs to follow suit, I don't think that memphis is the key as much as an exception, I'd rather see a strong league then just one strong team in a weak league

i'm not educated on this subject but will comment....i think the A10 did not work together as a conference to become stronger....that the philly based schools, i.e. temple and john chaney and others promoted their own interests and success, some schools were just along for the ride and didn't have the means to arise....A10 commisioner needed more influence....after Fr Hoff's influence at X, the university was able to build the Cintas Center. Some A10 schools with ancient facilities is really an issue, but it's not an easy accomplishment as it took years for X...additions of x, ud, late additions of charlotte, st. louis have changed the conference. Coaches, A10 has had several young coaches, several young rosters...now, we recall how hard it was for X to schedule desirable non-conf, took years to get to this point...bobinski/miller recognize the need to help A10 to help X, may have influence of the future.....linda bruno out in june....new commish will be a big step. end

Wrong, while $$$ are important it is the schools with the strategic planning, good AD and coach, and a university president that pushes the athletic department as an important part of the total university plan that will succeed. $$$ alone will not make it.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

And how many schools in the A-10 put all that together...1.

So, for the vast majority of A-10 caoches, they leave because of:

A-10 needs to be a stronger brand.

Miller needs to stay at XU with continued success.
Martelli needs to stay at SJ with continued success.
Temple is one of the few "name" teams in our league, and they need to recapture success soon (since their name is associated with Chaney).
St. Louis needs to keep Majerus and be successful.

IMO, those are the 4 programs that can lead the success of the A-10. In addition, I still think the league is too big, which doesn't help anyone= A-10 with 14 teams. Yeah, bring up the Big 10...but they have name/brand recognition. A-10 needs to go to 10 teams.

Um...likely. Do you think they'd leave for a pay cut?

well you first two points will happen and your last point I wish wouldn't.
