MU fans feel that this is a Thad Matta style move. Funny today on Around the Horn the same Thad Matta name came up in this same vain. They called it the Thaddusmatta.

Marquette fan here and I come in peace. I couldn't help but notice this thread and had to come and defend the Marquette program. I guess I am curious to know exactly what kind of job you think Marquette is?? You scoffed at some of the names some Marquette fans threw out.

What some of you don't apparently understand is that Marquette is the BEST job available in College Basketball right now. This is the Big East, and there will be no shortage of PRIME candidates(I think some of the names that will apply for this job would shock a lot of people).

Marquette is also capable of paying 2.5-3.0 million per year for the right guy. I don't know how realistic a guy like Calipari is, but I do agree with the original MU poster that said that is a call that HAS to be made. It would have to be tempting to move from Conference USA to the best basketball conference in the land wouldn't you think?? Just as it would have to be VERY tempting to move from the A10, to a conference as prestigious as the BE and especially if you can do it for 2.0 million plus wouldn't you agree??

I see Marquette as a middle of the road Big East team who has won one NCAA tournament game in the last 5 years. The Big East put 8 teams in the tournament this year and only one made it as far as Xavier. They play in the oldest NBA stadium in the country that is not even on campus. The only thing they have over XU is tradition, a bigger enrollment, and an overrated conference affiliation. I guarantee the Big East as it is today will not be the same in 3-5 years. The mix of basketball only and football schools will implode once Tranghese retires.

XU will pay sean Miller close to 1.5 million next year, by all accounts close to the same amount Crean was making after 9 years at your glorious institution. Furthermore Forbes came out with a list of the 20 most valuable basketball programs in the NCAA. XU was #20 and MU was not on the list.

A move from XU to MU would be lateral at best.

I'm sorry but I strongly disagree. There were many Xavier fans that thought Thad would never leave either, and as soon as a more prestigious job then Xavier came around, he took it. Admit it or not, like it or not, MU is definitely a step up from XU. It's the Big East, the best basketball conference in the country.

I have no idea if MU will pursue Miller or not, or if he would be interested in the MU job or not, but I'm guessing Xavier is NOT his destination job.

Furthermore, presently Xavier is recruiting at a higher level than Marquette. Next Year MU has four recruits Three 3 star players and a 2 star player.

Xavier has two tranfers along with Three 3 star players and a 4 star player.

There is a difference between going to the school with the biggest athletic budget in all of NCAA athletics and a similar Jesuit school in a less desirable city.

Funny how Jim Larranaga turned down his Alma mater to stay at G. Mason...The Big East has Louisville, UConn, Pitt, Georgetown, WVU, Villanova, Marquette (big ? now), Syracuse is old news, Depaul has basically turned into LaSalle. Trust me the SEC is a much better league. X and Marquette will probably be in the same league somewhere in the near future so Miller would be crazy plus his boys are pretty well adapted to this area....X has an on campus arena and a chance to dominate the A10 ala Memphis. Marquette besides league at the moment is a not a step up and I'm sure Crean had to be hearing some rumblings from the alumni for lack of NCAA success post Wade.
