Doc, I'd like to see the basketball numbers over the last 25 years, which right now is a lot more relevant than all-time numbers. Of pick the last 18 years, because that's how many years colllege freshmen have been alive. I would imagine Xavier looks better than Marquette overall in those stretches.
As for the academic numbers, Princeton dwarfs both of us on all counts, but I don't think that's particularly relevant to the basketball.

Re: Marquette NOT on Par With Xavier
Here's the comparison:
Last 25 years:
NCAA Appearances: Xavier-17, Marquette-9
NCAA Wins: Xavier-15, Marquette-8
Best NCAA Finishes: Xavier-2 Elite 8's, 1 Sweet 16, Marquette- 1 Final 4, 1 Sweet 16.
Last 20 years:
NCAA Appearances: Xavier 14, Marquette-9
NCAA Wins: Xavier 14, Marquette-8
Best NCAA Finishes: See 25 year totals
Last 10 years:
NCAA Appearances: Xavier-7, Marquette-5
NCAA Wins: Xavier- 9, Marquette-5
Best NCAA Finishes: Xavier-2 Elite 8's, Marquette-1 Final 4
Last 5 Years:
NCAA Appearances: Xavier-4 , Marquette-3
NCAA Wins: Xavier-7, Marquette-1
Best NCAA Finishes: Xavier- 2 Elite 8's, Marquette- 1 second round.
Hey, credit to Marquette for the 2003 run. They earned it by beating higher seeded teams, but Xavier, over every year increment span, and, most importantly, over the last 5 years has been better and more consistent.
Championships 30 years ago mean nothing to kids today. Loyola Chicago and LaSalle have National Championships too.
Sorry, Doc. On the stats that matter, Xavier is the better program. The numbers prove it.

Re: Marquette NOT on Par With Xavier
Wow - I never said MU was the better program! The title of this thread was Marquette NOT on par with Xavier...I simply posted some numbers that would refute that. XU has had, in many ways, a more successful past 25 years in hoops than MU - but does that make it a better program? I don't know. Going back 25 years also conveniently includes the dark era of MU hoops when we went from '83 to '93 w/o an NCAA appearance and excludes the golden era from '70 or so to '82 when MU was as good as anyone out there year in and year out...but I digress.
At any rate, it looks like our coaching search will lead us to either Lowery of SIU, Brownell of Wright St., or Buzz Williams (current MU assistant). Do you guys think that Miller would jump to Pitt if that became available at some point in the future?

With "no disrespect" to Bobinski, what was he thinking when he said that the Marquette job is not on a par with that of Xavier?

Here's what Dow wrote...
and Bobinski said with "no disrespect to Marquette" but as far as Miller's concerned, the Marquette job isn't on par with the Xavier one.
He's saying as far as Miller is concerned. And, as a Xavier fan, that is as far as I am concerned as well.

If I'm running Marquette, I'd hire the guy in an NY minute. He's never been a part of a losing program. If Miller would have left I guarantee Groce would have been at the top of Bobo's list. The guy is a stud recruier and when you listen to him talk he sounds alot like Miller. Forget Buzz is it Williams Groce would be better than Crean.

Re: Marquette NOT on Par With Xavier
MU fans, pay no attention to Neutral(?) ... he wanted Ron Everhart at Xavier. In case you don't know who Ron is ... well, then you now know a lot about Neutral(?).
But MOR, if a coach who sends in defenses on 2' x 4' poster board ... Z for zone .. etc... is a legend in waiting .. pray tell who he hasn't even gotten a sniff in the past year for any of these jobs .... Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan, Evansville, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, San Diego, Bowling Green, UNO, Santa Clara, Ball State, Indiana, Purdue, Wyoming, Penn, Temple, West Virginia, Providence, Indiana State, New Mexico State, Wichita State, Arkansas, Iowa, Arizona State, California, Indiana, LSU, Purdue, South Carolina, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, Wake Forest, Cincinnati .......
Just wondering?
