Is a One and Done player worth it?

Postby muskieman » Wed Apr 16, 2008 9:35 am

Gordon, OJ, Beasley, Jerryd Bayless, Kevin Love all gone after one year. How far did it take their teams...IU out in one, same for USC and AU one of the reasons K-state went to the second round is that they play USC and someone had to win.
Even Walker from K-state is gone. Love we know had success but he didn't take them past where they had been the past two seasons.

I don't fault the kids for wanting to make big money and all basketball players on courts and playgrounds throughout the usa dream of someday playing in the NBA. But one year in college

Tell me what does it do to a program? Short term fixes rarely work.

What will teams like K-state, usc, etc be like without their freshmen stars becoming their 2nd year experienced players?
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

It's a problem frankly I'm happy X doesn't have. Sure to have a freshman of that caliber choose X would be great, but that is were it stops. One of the things that make X so unique is their highly uncommon sucess both on the court and in the classroom. Players that choose X do so to spend 4 years in this unique environment, A great player at X will get his degree...and a national player of the year award...while dominating most everyteam they cross. Watching some of the "big" programs, many times the struggle for and continuity over lets say a four year period. Look at duke over the past 5 years...tons of mcdonalds aa's, loads of talent but now 2 or 3 big recruiting classes have come and gone from duke in 1 or 2 years. Year in year out it seems duke is chalked full of young talent but even coach k has had trouble keeping even marginal players to stay in the program. A four year senior at duke could watch 3 classes come and go before he graduates.

X will land a player or players in the future good enough to be one and doners but I beleive if he choose X its to get a degree on the way to the NBA.

I'de much rather be a spring board for coaches every 5-10 years than an institution that has to rebuild its roster every year or 2. 4 years seems too short, could it reaaly be time to say goodbye to stan and and duncan? At X senior day really means something, players and their families have a chance to celebrate their time at X with freinds and family. Lets pray XU senior day isn't relegated to being for four year walk-ons that have been buried on the bench. For me four years is hardly enough for our boys, when they leave u feel as if u are saying goodbye to a dear freind

It's a never-ending argument. From 1996-2005, was it better to be the Florida Marlins, win 2 World Series, and pretty much suck in between, or the Atlanta Braves, win 0 World Series, but consistently be one of the top teams in baseball?

Is OSU unhappy because Oden and Conley took them to the championship game? Probably not, though I'm sure they wish they'd won one more game.

Is UCLA unhappy with this season? My guess is yes, because, as you point out, they've been there without him.

Is KSU unhappy with how this season turned out? I'd say no, given how bad their team looked when we played them, and how much better they were at the end.

I'd say the same about USC. They didn't expect Mayo to take them to the Final Four because the rest of the team wasn't that strong.

IU's a different case because the team pretty much quit playing after Sampson left. Had they made a serious run in the NCAA, they may have felt Gordon's one year was enough.

Our approach works for us, but if Miller's ever got a chance to land THE high-school player, it would be hard to walk away, even knowing the kid would likely only spend one season at X. Realistically, that type of player will probably go elsewhere, so we won't be faced with that decision.

It depends on the program. Some programs will simply go out and sign the next one and done guy to take his place. Those program are not hurt as much as say a Kansas St. or similar program that may not get another one in done type for 10 years.

The NBA dropped the ball by instituting this rule. Make it 2 years or none.

You might be right, but keep in mind that the NBA would have to get the Players' Association agreement as to any rule change, and it might be subject to a legal challenge as well.

There are no easy answers anymore.

If I remember, Stern wanted a 2 year ban but the Player's Union vetoed it. One year does not accomplish too much and it weakens the college game.

I would rather that the players that are good enough to play in the NBA right out of high school not even play college ball. The NBA needs better scouts or GM's.

An example down here ins Raleigh is J.J. Hickson for NC State who is most likely gone. He is a great player, but totally ruined the chemistry for NCSU. He was great when he was in, but the team as a whole looked better when he was not in the game. The main thing here is if the player fulfills a need or not. NCSU had an over abundance of big men this year and didn't really need another one. For example, next year our most glaring need is a PG. We have some good recruits coming in, but it would be great if we had a great player who could step in and be a dominant player right away. At the same time, I don't think a star PG is going to win us a NC next year, but the development of Holloway or Lyon's or whoever may help us more the next year. I guess if a player can come in and fill a big need, get you farther then you would have gone without them, and doesn't affect your other 4 year players from developing then it is a good call. With a team like X, I'm not sure that it fits our situation very well. We need the development here, because most of our players can't just step in and play big minutes as a freshman.

For every Danny Manning there are 100 Dontonio Wingfields. This year’s super frosh were simply putting in time as a result of a racist NBA rule. Does Michelle Wie even go to school? There are teenage players in the NHL. How many of our women Olympic gymnastics are even women? Most of them can’t even drive. Greg Oden, despite is age (35) had to play for (not attend) the Ohio State University for half a year because he was not "ready" for the pros.

<<Does Michelle Wie even go to school?>>

Yes, there's every indication that Ms. Wie is attending classes at Stanford.

Yes, The Man kept Kevin Love from going to the NBA last year! It's a racist outrage!
