LH, Sean does not make the descision who redshirts if anyone redshirts. The player and his family or legal guardian makes the decision. Sean may suggest, or may ask if the player would be more comfortable getting stronger academically or physically and learning the game more but he can not order a player to redshirt.
I guarantee you if Sean were to forcefully redshirt any of the five freshmen, one or more would leave before the semester is over.
These players were brought to Xavier to contribute immediately. The one factor no one has talked about here is injury. An injury changes things completely.
Look at the returning players. Love, Robinson, McClean, CJ, BJ, Derrick and Taylor are all front court players. Adrion and Dante are the only back court players and Adrion could play the three. That leaves only Dante Jackson to play in the backcourt. Frease is frontcourt.
That leaves Walsh who could play 2 or 3, Redford who is a 2, or a 3 in a three-guard offense, and Lyons and Holloway as 1 or 2. Graves is going to struggle to earn minutes, but remember, he is for all intents and purposes a sophomore, and that's where most players improve dramatically.
If you insist someone MUST redshirt so you can say, "See, I told you so," that's fine. No one can argue with you because that's your opinion and you're sticking to it and stuck with it. Good for you.
But the facts are Xavier will need at least three or four guards --one a very good shooter to provide instant offense--and all to provide defense. Dante wil lbe much better at both the 1 and 2 this coming season, again because that's where most players improve--between their freshman and sophomore years.
In this day and age, recruiting is a prime factor in determining a team's success. If Sean gets the reputation as a coach who routinely redshirts players, his recruiting success will be very limited.
I doubt very seriously if anyone will redshirt this season.
