Q,

With all due respect you are flat out wrong. There is no way 4 new guards are all going to see significant enough minutes to not warrant redshirting one of them. It is simple math and thankfully Sean sees it. There are only 80 minutes at the two guard sports. Dante is going to play at least 25 minutes a game. That leaves 55 minutes for Holloway, Lyons, Redford, Raymond and Graves. BJ will play 30 minutes plus next year, probably around 10 at shooting guard (45). Graves will see 10 at shooting guard (35). Lyons and Holloway will split PG duties, probably grabing the remaining 35 minutes or at least 30, leaving at the most 5 minutes for Redford. Why have him waste a year for 5 minutes a game? It is not worth it and the best thing would be to redshirt the player (whoever it is) who will be the low man on the totem pole in minutes per game.

LH, Q has his opinion and you have yours but neither are correct until Sean and the players make those decisions. Your comment that 4 new guards can not play makes sense to you but many others feel that this team will need everyone. By next March one will be right. Many things can happen including, God forbid, injury which may determine the team makeup.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Of course time will tell which opinion turns out to be true, however there is one opinion that makes more sense than another and wasting one year of a player's eligibility for a maximum of 5 minutes of PT does not make much sense.

LH - You do realize that in reality no freshman wants to sit out their freshman year don't you?

Say a kid redshirts his freshman year, but still doesn't get the playing time he wants his sophmore year, that kid is basically screwed because he already used his redshirt year and he really couldn't transfer. I said it before, but Sean is recruiting some highly ranked guards for '09, higher than any guards coming in this year. There will always be competition for playing time and it's not always as easy as saying, ok well someone will just have to redshirt.

Sean recruited all these kids knowing he would have a plethora of incoming guards and he would have a lot of options.

You're the one who keeps saying it would be a waste of a year for a kid not to redshirt if he only plays 5 minutes a game, but maybe the player doesn't see it that way.

If someone who only plays 5-8 minutes a game hits some big shots that help us win games, I'm all for them playing.

If someone isn't getting the mintues they had hoped, there is possibility they will transfer. That is part of college basketball as well.

X-factor,

You do realize that XU had redshirted players before and that those players all thought they would play from day 1. You do realize that it is not often that XU has 7 new players in one year, four being freshman guards, right. You do realize that they low man on the totem pole PT wise will get at most 5 minutes. You do realize that it would be a waste of a year for that player not to redshirt.

LH, you do realize that next year X is STILL going to have the same amount of guards because only CJ and BJ will graduate. BJ may be getting 2g minutes but I suspect most will come as the 3. Would you want to be the red-shirt who didn't get game experience and is now behind the other 3 guards? What if X is able to land an absolute stud at 2 this summer. Would you want to red-shirt and be looking at the possibility of being the 4th or 5th guard? Too many questions but red-shirting is definitely NOT a guarantee. It may happen but I think the odd are just as good that it won't.

Good point get real. I can see a player red shirting like Cole did because of West and knowing West would be gone after the season but if you are a red shirt and you come back the next year and no one from your position has left you still are behind the other guards and have now less game time experience then those guards that played. Unless a guard has a physical problem wouldn't he think IF I am not going to play, I might as well transfer.

I never said it was a guarantee but it does make sense. I would rather not be in the same class for four years with a log jam of players. Sitting out puts you in a class where it is not quite as log jammed at your position.

Also 5 minutes of mop of time is not going to make you that much better than if you sit out as a redshirt. A redshirt can still practice every day.

Try selling a player that if he sits out that in 4 years he might be the front runner to have the spot. The player isn't foolish, he can see that the players he came in with will have experience in game situations which he does not have and think I am putting myself at a disadvantage. I think a player would rather be given the chance to prove himself on the floor in 5 minutes which might lead the coach to play him more as the season progresses. Everyone of the players coming in have certain talents that X will need and while Redford is chosen by some fan to red shirt his ability to put the ball in the hoop makes him a good candidate to come in off the bench when X needs a punch on the O side.

Face it we don't know what Sean has in store for these guys and it is a luxury that great for a coach to have. With the type of D that coach likes to play every body might be needed next year. Losing Stan and Drew dictated you bring in as many as you can because it will take a committee to replace each one of them.

The player will be able to impress the coaching staff in practice not in 5 minutes of mop up time against SBU. It will be easy to convice a kid that is not going to see significant PT as a freshman to use that year as a redshirt. If they know they are not going to play, why not wait and see if they will in the future? The alternative is to lose a year for 5 minutes of mop up time.

Schools and players do it all the time when situations like this exist. That is why the NCAA allows it and XU should take advantage of the rule. They have in the past and will probably do so again this year.
