I am sure some of that DannyV money could sweeten the pot for Jonas.DannyV76 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 1:32 pmThat's a great point kyz that I hadn't thought about! Also worth noting in his on court interview right after the game last night saying "this is what Xavier is all about". Seemed rather heartfelt. Between that and their Group picture at the Precinct last week with the Christopher's and the Miller's I'm sure he's feeling the love from Xavier.kyzrex wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 10:14 amThreads NEVER seem to stay on track, do they?longliveskip wrote: ↑Fri Apr 01, 2022 9:56 amwhy did this thread morph into the NIT final game thread?
let's stay on track, gents.
is Jonas 100% gone? i'm hearing head coach at Georgia State is a real possibility.
Ga. St. is a definite possibility for Hayes. So is returning to the U of Ga. as an assistant. Miller has said that he can stay on at X as the Associate Head Coach. Considering Miller is probably looking at missing some games next season, that will give him further opportunity to be the man. Even if that’s only for a few more games, that’s still a great enticement I would think. Hopefully he stays and then when more positions open up next year he will be primed to get a really good job as the HC somewhere. GaSt is definitely a stepping stone job.

I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

Re: Who leaves? Who stays?
In response to my old roommate Joe Collins i have to disagree about Jones, Odum and Freemantle riding the bench at a big name school. I think Jones would start at almost EVERY top 20 school. Jones can dribble, pass, play defense, drive and rebound and has good size. Odum could start at half or more of the SEC schools. Fremantle could start at a lot of schools. I fear everything depends on coach Hayes. If Hayes goes to Georgia St as a head coach or Georgia as Head assistant coach than Jones, Odum and maybe Edwards follow him. Looks like Ward is a long shot too. Freemantle is probably gone too. That being said I am willing to pay the price for getting Miller. We are going to be fine no matter who leaves.

I know absolutely nothing and have heard no rumors, but logic tells me anything rumored prior to the coaching change has lost all validity because of the new reality. I imagine today's meeting will have a bigger influence on situation than anything that has happened in the past.

I am not too worried about who stays and/or leaves. I have been at Texas Tech for 50 years now and this new transfer rules changes everything. When Chris Beard left last spring for UT, he left the cupboard empty, but the new coach when out and got 5 transfers and we had a great season. Sean will do the same.

Re: Who leaves? Who stays?
Why would players follow Hayes to Ga STATE? You’re telling us that they would rather go play in a lower level school that has a very very slim chance of going to the NCAA tourney over playing in the BE, playing for a future hall of fame coach, and playing in front of 10,000 fans every game? I don’t believe that for a minute.

Re: Who leaves? Who stays?
My absolute guess is that most is based on the decision of Jonas Hayes. And that decision might go according to a conversation had by Christopher, Miller and Hayes. It might have gone something like this:
Christopher: “Jonas, if you take a headcoaching job now, the only power 5 job available might be Butler. Otherwise you take a lesser conference coaching job and a lesser conference paycheck, and maybe you’re stuck with that for a good part or all of your career.”
Miller: “if you stay, you stay as my associate head coach. That puts you in a big salary range for a year with a team you already know and love, and the recruits you’ve already got coming in. You have already coached a Big East team through the NIT to a championship. I am probably going to be on suspension for 8 to 10 games next year. That means you would be the head coach for a good part of the regular season.“
Christopher: “Then you enter the coaching carousel a year later as a top candidate, with a résumé of power five 5 season and championship head coaching experience. You also have another year of experience under Sean’s tutelage under your belt. With a larger number of jobs out there….maybe you even have your pick.”
Miller: “What’s your best shot at the power of 5 job, coach? Stay at an Xavier another year and then move on, or take a mid major or better job now and hope something comes along at a power 5 sometime in the future?”
Perfect picture…Jonas Hayes stays. Nunge and Colby see a possibility of a ring in their futures with this team, and so do some recruits and transfers who see a winning coach backed up by a winning coach. All the best stay and huge talent joins them as team players. Announcers start pulling for X during games. UC gets good, but never quite good enough. One of Trump’s kids marries one of Stephanopoulos’s kids….oh wait…
God I love speculation!

Kyzrex you are right about your response. I stated it wrong. What I tried to say is if Hayes goes to Georgia as a assistant head coach they will follow Hayes to Georgia . If Hayes goes to Georgia State as a head coach or really anywhere else in the south as a coach than I fear Jones and Odum will leave too. They may not be at the same school as Hayes but they will leave for a school in the south. Lets hope Hayes stays.

Welcome to the free agent world of college bball. I'm losing interest. That said, the only thing that would shock me is if Jonas Hayes doesn't get a head coaching job offer.

Agreed.
I think he will get a lot of interest, but don't think he will bite on any offers from very low mid-majors like Ga St. I think he will wait for an offer from an avg. to solid mid-major like SMU.

Lots of interesting speculation here and am enjoying the banter while we wait for the dust to settle. That said, and maybe I am out to lunch here but at this stage: isn't "no new good news" as each day passes by?
