Ok, thanks to all for the great information, this is very helpful. It's too bad there isn't a better east-west route across W.V.

Also, jamal, I am also curious about payday's question regarding whether you take PA Turnpike to I-70 and down, or take I-79 South to I-68 after you are through Wheeling? It looks like those both take about the same time. Thanks again.

I did my undergrad studies at the University of Maryland - College Park so I have taken every possible route.

They only two viable options for you are the northern route (through the Penn Turnpike) and the southern route (through West Virginia).

The northern route is about 15-30 minutes shorter but the turnpike is hell on earth to drive. It is very thin and closed in by walls in the middle and on the outside. Trucks will be surrounding you front back and side and make the trip very stressful.

If your car is not a 1980 volvo (like the one I had to drive my first two years of college) and has more than 40 horsepower to help you get up the mountains in West Virginia, I highly recommend the southern route.

To echo the above sentiment, the southern route is infinately nicer to drive. Unless there is a ton of snow in the mountains, I also take the route down 79 and over 68.
