This quote is simply brilliant:
"James and McNeal were not highly recruited and therefore cannot be considered the prizes of a good recruiting job. Who did we beat out? Dayton and Evansville?
His recruiting has been average at best."

UNC is the Darfur of intelligence.
XU fans don't root for UC football.

<<I'm sorry but I strongly disagree. There were many Xavier fans that thought Thad would never leave either, and as soon as a more prestigious job then Xavier came around, he took it.>>
Thad left for one of the "names" in college sports, Ohio State. Thad didn't leave to go to another basketball-only Catholic school, no matter what the conference.
I'm in Chicago, not Cincy, so I have all the respect in the world for the Marquette program, but simply throwing "Big East" out there is like Northwestern throwing "Big Ten" out there.
The conference affiliation doesn't automatically make a job a top-tier job that will attract the biggest names in coaching.
Our last five coaches were-
(1) an asst. at Penn;
(2) an asst. at ND;
(3) head man at Loyola MD after being an asst. at Xavier;
(4) head man at Butler; and
(5) an asst. at Xavier.
Crean was an asst. at MSU. See the pattern? MU is likely to get either an up-and-coming head man at a non-BCS school, or an asst. from a BCS school. I'd be surprised if you see a prominent head man slide over and take the job, and not because MU doesn't have a good program.
If Miller left X tomorrow, I certainly wouldn't expect Calipari or Few to be in the mix for our job.

Thad was also making about $600,000 at X whil Miller is making $900,000 with a soon to be bump around $1.4. No way can Marquette pay between $2.5 and $3.0. Do you know what Billie G makes at Kentucky? Go look it up and rethink your statement.

In light of what Marquette did to the old MCC, it would be poetic justice for them to hire Calipari, whose leaving UMass on probation took quite a few years to overcome. Hire the sleazeball!

Marquette's former coach before Tom Crean? The Great Mike Deane. Before that? The "Genius" Kevin O'Neill who has just been summarily dismissed from Arizona and who couldn't wait to leave Marquetteto go to Tennessee. That is a real coaching tree.
The conference afilliation means nothing. 8 Big Greased schools now have had coaching changeovers in the last two years! Providence can't fill their job. As with others in the Big Greased (powered by BESPN) there is an incrediblly inflated sense of entitlement. Look around. Only Louisville out of 8 invitees made the Elite 8. It took a bracket falling apart for Villanova to make the Sweet 16. Hell, the Atlantic 10 has an NIT Finalist, somewhere that the Big Greased couldn't even make the Final 4 of. I'm sure that BESPN just hates that one of their little choreboys couldn't be on their network tonight.
Face it Marquette fan. Your program is no better, and arguably worse than Xavier or even Creighton. Your latest resident "genius" hasn't gotten out of the first weekend of the NCAA's in the last 5 years, while Xavier has 2 Elite 8's. You don't have an on-campus arena while Xavier has a beauty. You have to be a secondary tenant in an NBA arena. And don't go back 31 years to your Al McGuire National Championship. That has as much relevance now as Loyola Chicago's 1963 Championship.
No Marquette fan. Get off your pedestal. Your program is nothing more than a midwestern stepchild to the UConn's Louisville's and Georgetowns of the Big Greased, the most over-hyped and RPI scam -fueled league in college basketball. Enjoy your continual 6th-7th place finishes at best.

Re: I have found a fanbase more delusional than UD's
In fairness Marquette averaged 15,345 in attendance for 2007 which was good for 14th in the NCAA by contrast Xavier came in at 9,910. Conference affiliation may not be the end all but it is good for one thing, money. Marquette received the lowest payout from the Big East in 2006 at $1,546,022, Xavier received the highest payout from the A-10 at $500,917. Marquette will have money to throw at a new coach. They may well have been overpaying Crean based on recent performance. Of course that money will take a major dive should the Big East split and maybe Crean saw the writing on the wall regarding that.
No doubt Xavier has been more successful in recent years however Marquette is one of the few teams to reach the final 4 from a non bcs conference.

I didn't realize that Calipari was 146-26 during his last 5 years at UMass, with Sweet 16-2nd round-2nd round-Elite Eight-Final Four NCAA finishes.
That's a longer sustained run of excellence (at least on the court) than I remembered UMass having under Calipari.

Didn't UMass have their 1996 record in the NCAA Tourney negated and the final four was vacated because of Marcu Camby's acceptance of agents' improper gifts?DC Muskie wrote:UMass was never on probation.gym from delhi wrote:In light of what Marquette did to the old MCC, it would be poetic justice for them to hire Calipari, whose leaving UMass on probation took quite a few years to overcome. I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

From umasshoops.com-
*1995-96 notes: The 35-2 record led the nation in winning percentage.
NCAA Tournament appearance was vacated by the NCAA for use of an ineligible student athlete.
The NCAA no longer recognizes the school’s tournament appearance or its 4-1 record in tournament games that season.
