David Freaking West- May 13, 2008 Edition

He's single-handedly keeping the Hornets in game 5 with the Spurs. 22 points- over half of the whole team's.

He's heading for a personal best. When was the last time he scored over 45?

He is killing it out there! I like it when he mixes up his game between facing up and playing with his back to the basket. He also did a great job on defense so far controlling Duncan and blocking three shots.

38 pts.............14 rebounds.............5 blocks.........star of the game and nearly setting a club playoff record in points missing it by one point.

Interviewed after the game and the only issue is that he had a towel on his shoulder covering his X. Great interview by a great Muskie.

You forgot the five assists with that score line. that means he was responsible for between 48 and 53 points total on the night, plus the rebounds and five blocks, all with a bad back. Don't forget, the trainer is X grad Terry Koffler.
How about West though. Hell, he even rejected a Tim Duncan shot and then went reverse layup on him as TD tried for a block at the other end. Tonight reminded me of the game against Dayton.

"Q" I thought the same thing about dayton. I was really wishing he would get to 47 and probably could have but was giving up the ball too much in the second half. He injured his back but said that they would work on it today and he should be ready for the next game. They will need him because he opens it up for everyone else. His block of TD was sweet and the reverse was double sweet. If a few of the other guys get hot they could end this next game but it has been blow out city for the home team so far.

I have to say (again) that DW has made himself into a MUCH better pro player than I thought he would. My concern was that he would be a "tweener" in the pros, and he was a little tentative out there in his first two seasons, averaging 4 and 6 points per game, respectively.

But he's obviously made a position for himself, combining both inside and outside scoring, and he should be given mucho credit for becoming an All-Star. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/david_wes ... stats.html

Yes, Paul made these Hornets, but remember something: Everything started with West. Once Paul arrived three years ago, they were fast friends, a bond born out of playing for Skip Prosser at Xavier and Wake Forest, respectively.


West was GM Jeff Bower’s draft pick five years ago, at No. 18, when West was the national player of the year out of Xavier University with what amounts to baggage in our twisted basketball culture. West had played four years of college ball, had a diploma and he had to listen to everyone tell him that meant he had no upside. How good could he be if he hadn’t left school early?

“It has never stopped driving me,” he said.



That, folks, is DWest to a T. How great is it that, in another genuis move in the list of genius moves, the Xavier administration realized how special this guy was and made him the only player to have his number retired while he was still actively playing!!?

I think the thing that makes David West special in my mind is that he has me rooting against my favorite team, the Spurs. When you think of quality players, Duncan, Paul and West are mighty fine company. I hope either David or James P can bring back another trophy to the Cintas for show.

Then Robert Horry comes along with one of his cheap shot hard fouls and knocks West out of a game the Spurs had already had well in hand. Sickening. Just a repeat of his smashing Phoenix Steve Nash into the press table and Amari Stoudemire being suspended for the next game for taking a couple of steps onto the floor in an autonomic reaction. Horry should be suspended for next week's game with the Hornets in New Orleans. I just hope the layoff gives West time to rest that back.
