Texas job/Sean

Postby bluegrass » Sun Mar 23, 2025 2:14 pm

What does everyone think of the rumors of Sean to Texas? Would be ironic that beating Texas would lead to us losing our coach to them. Personally I don’t see him leaving despite Texas offering more money and NIL .

Barring something unforeseen, I think he's 80% gone. They've reached out to the big names apparently (Oats, Few, Underwood, and even Pitino), and reportedly got nowhere.

Unfortunately, I don't think his buyout is exorbitant, but whatever it is, add to the NIL coffers. I have no inside sources, but they are supposedly talking. Again, I don't want him to go, but there are enough good candidates they would attract. I'd interview Mack, and Luke Murray (architect of Connecticut's offense and a lot of E.C. recruiting ties) along with several others, preferably ones with several good players to bring along.

Anti -Homer. If we lose Miller I'd hire Luke Murray in a heartbeat. I forgot about him.

AH -

While unhappy about the likely Coach Miller departure, appreciate the information you have provided and the future possibilities. Comfortable with either Coach Mack returning or Coach Murray getting his first HC opportunity.

My parting words to Coach Miller, be careful what you wish for, you might get it. Big U’s churn and burn people.

I heard about Texas and Sean and mentioned it on the Texas or Illinois thread. I thought it was maybe something Sean would look at and say X stuck with me, so I would stick with them. The fact that he is taking the Texas job actually makes me realize that X is back to being a stepping-stone job. I will not be like the people who thank him or say they can understand why he is taking the job,

As my Xavier grad son said. To hell with him after X pulled him out of the wilderness. Don't go poaching any of our players. I hope we beat them in the tourney, but first, get us a coach who can build a team and stay a while.
I asked a ref if he could give me a technical foul for thinking bad things about him. He said, of course not. I said, well, I think you stink. And he gave me a technical. You can't trust em.

He would have been gone after the 22-23 season, but Terry reached the E8. Texas' AD was an Asst AD (or similar role) at Arizona when they hired Miller. Until the NIL situation gets under control, the teams with the top NIL budgets will rule CBB. It's consolidating already. Though all the games haven't been played, this will probably be the year where the most 1-4 seeds advance to the SW 16 in years. All four, number-one seeded teams have at least 3-4 major contributors via the portal. Duke is the exception, bc, they're Duke. Miller is super ambitious and, if nothing else, can read the tea leaves.

Rip the band-aid off now and get to work. I bet a lot of coaching agents will call X, but again, I'd zero in hard on Murray and Mack, especially with the portal opening up on Monday. X needs to get someone in place asap.

If you asked me if I'd rather have Miller stay, or Swain and Conwell stay, it would be the latter. X will have to compete for both anyway, as most teams will with their top players. It's finally a buyer's market in cbb, so they need to test the market. X will have to ante up.

X loses Prosser (not great coach, but long legacy at X), and Matta goes to the E8.
X loses Matta, and Miller goes to the E8.
X loses Miller, and Mack goes to the E8.

With the right hire, the legacy of excellence will continue. X can't compete with the top money schools like Texas, Louisville, and Arkansas, but competitive enough to assemble a top 25 team. Time to move on.

Sean Miller proved once again exactly who he is. Some of us tried to warn you in March 2022 (feel free to look it up).

There is a reason that multiple, very respected (and wealthy) boosters directed their contributions elsewhere when Miller was brought back. They knew Sean well.

Hopefully we can now bring those boosters back into the basketball fold to help the new coach and NIL.

Luke Murray will be the new coach barring our AD screwing it up once again.

Chitown,

Your warning to Miller is a good one. Rodney Terry had 3 appearances to the Tourney and reached an E8 and still got canned. Is it strange that I'm a little excited about the prospect of new blood? Don't get me wrong, I wanted Miller to stay, but more for continuity's sake than anything else. There was an uncomfortable edge to him this year. He's still a great coach, but Mack is also very good, and I think Murray is more than ready, having been mentored by the best for the last few years, and Mack previously.

Miller restored X to its rightful place as being right outside of the elites (refer to the previous stat of having the 15th-best winning percentage over the last 40 years). I wish him well, but time to move on. Tomorrow will start a wild ride for two reasons: the portal and coaching search.

for most Coaches it is all about the monies $$$$$$.....no loyalty. I guess X cannot afford the big bucks that attract the best coaches...???? Please no more re trends....no Chris Mack either. I would have said Pat Kelsey after Steele was gone. But now at Louisville, X cannot afford Kelsey. X better hire someone good quick......NIL transfers start Monday.
